Default Scout Axle Upgrade Questions

I have a '75 IH Scout and I'm at the point where I need to upgrade my axles, and I would like your opinion on what route to take.

Rig details:
75 Scout
Fresh 345 V8
T18 trans (6.32 1st gear)
Dana 20 t-case (2:1)
Dana 44 front and rear w/ 3.54 gears
Spartan locker rear, open front
35" BFG MT old style


The plan is for this to be a trail rig only.

Current problems:
Front axle needs shafts and u-joints.
Need more gearing.
Want locked front and rear
Lack of money

So here are the options I'm looking at for upgrades:

Question 1: Do I upgrade to Dana 44 alloy shafts or Dana 60's with stock shafts? 44 would require me to get 1 more locker, 60 would require 2. I figure the price is about the same for 44 shafts or Dana 60's. 60 would also require me to buy new rims, and maybe new tires. 60's would require suspension modifications.

Question 2: Do I regear the axles to 5:13 or go tera low in the transfer case? it would be roughly the same gain in ratio. The transfer case could use a rebuild anyways. Cost is double for t-case upgrade.

knowing how you drive, I would recommend trying to find some CUCV military axles, get you to 4.56 plus detroit in the back. I'm pretty sure you won't have much issue sticking with 15" rims if you desire.

I got into my H1's pretty cheap otherwise.

I'm not 100% sure how chromo would do in the dana 44's with your driving style... make sure they warranty them against all breakages

what's your current wms to wms right now?

CUCV axles are probably $2000 if you can find them.
I don't think 15" rims fit on them.
Can you run H1's on SRW front axle without a spacer or new center? I think it would mess with the steering.
They claim that the alloy shafts are 40% stronger, and have a 10 year warranty.
Not sure on the WMS.

regear your axles, throw a lunchbox in the front, chromos all around, and add quality joints. not spicer 760s, get some sort of super joint... go super deep if you like to play in the rocks... 5.13s.

i only know of a certain few people who are the exception to the common census on the internet that D44s should lead a happy life turning 35s.

I thought you could still find Cucv for like $1500

Not sure on the steering. You could go my route and use dually stuff, actually makes things cheaper because the drw is worth like $200 less than the srw... then you get the excuse to run double beadlock.


I never priced chromo, want to post up a breakdown of price? (I'd be willing to bet you did this)

In all seriousness I'll probably look at some stuff in my boredom tomorrow. I'll offer to help fab some trusses if you want. I think there should be some material that can be "misplaced" at the shop.

If you put in a little time and effort you can buy tons for 5-600$....since its a trail rig weld the rear, lock the front....chances are they will have 4.10's or lower so you will gain gearing.

Your truck is v-8 powered and heavy....building the 44's is not the solution, and it will cost more.
