If you already have an LS2 and a 700r4 i would bolt that in there. Mate it to a NP205 transfer case with a twin stick conversion and you're good to go. You can probably buy mounts to adapt the LS engine to the factory frame.

Well, this was my original hope with the thread, to hear anyone who had 1st hand experience.

Obviously the SBCs are bolt in, since they came with them. (I'm thinking 1st gen 69-72 stuff, btw). With either Big Blocks or LSx motors, I'm wondering what specific details I'll need to deal with. Mounts, crossmember clearance, header clearance (I will run long tubes).

I am thinking a NP208 or NP241 to be lighter than a NP208. full soft top, lose the hard top, get the weight down as much as possible.

There are a few places that make mounts and crossmembers and such. Check out CK5.com for loads of info, including motor swap write ups. There is a ton of info there.

Also, you will probably have to custom make headers if you want to use long tubes. Shorties tend to be easier. Check out DIY4x4.com and offroaddesign.com

I would fab up my own parts if needed. If I wanted AC, it seems that hits the crossmember, but I'm not running ac. I need to swap oil pans anyway if I use the LS2, so should be able to use a truck pan and clear the crossmember.

I've checked out CK5, I like the 67-72 truck boards, as they have more on the 1st gens.

Doug Thorley has some tri-y's but I don't like them. I have heard trailblazer ss headers fit the 2wds, trying to determine if there's any difference between them and the 4wds.

From what I understand, 2wd headers usually hit the frame on a 4x4 but with decent fab skills you could route the tubes in a way that would fit.

Why are you trying to lighten a blazer? With 500hp your going to need to run heavy axle/shafts anyway. That commando would have been sweet with that aluminum block. Hell, I don't know why you got rid of that fiberglass tub if you wanted a featherlight.

Quit trying to build something without a plan and just get a rusty running blazer with a 5.7. Run the sob until it uses more oil then gas then start thinking about a swap.

Sorry to bust your balls but seriously get a pen and paper and write down how much this thing is going to cost. I am dragging on my junk because I am currently saving up the 5k for the wheels and tires. But, I am still chipping away dedicated to finish. You have had like half a dozen started now and it sucks that you invest so much time, skill, and cash only to run out halfway through.

Life gets in the way and such. But, If you have something that moves to begin with you can make small upgrades instead of trying to make a massive project out of it and get overwhelmed by the amount of work you need to do while everyone else is already out there.

I vote for the engine you have just sitting now otherwise. Might as well put it to some use other then a place for spiders to live.

Perhaps read the posts. Its a street cruiser. The Dana 44 / 12 bolt would be just fine for the street and sand. If you don't believe that, you spend too much time reading posts about dana 60s and not enough time looking at whats been run at silver lake in the last 30 years.

I don't, and have never owned a commando.

I don't want a featherlight. But there is a real consideration between an aluminum block LS drivertrain and an iron big block with an NP205. close to 400 lbs difference. 1st gens are lighter than later models. Basic interior, no top, LS drivetrain, under 4000 lbs is possible.

I am aware of the cost. I'm also quite comfortable with it, thanks. I have never run out of time or money on any project.

The motor I have in the garage is for one of those other project Jeeps that you think I parted out. But it could find a home in a blazer if we get one, and I'd get a 6.2 for the CJ6.

thats actually something I've thought about too, I need to look into tuning for turbos.

Although I would think that maybe a lower compression LQ4 (or better, an LY6) would be a better starting point than the 11:1 LS2 that I have now.

Would probably need to think about something other than the 700R4 trans, also.

I am not really a diesel guy, and it doesn't fit the bill of what we are looking for. In a full convertable family rig, the idea of diesel exhaust and soot is not appealing.

Thinking something with a lumpy cam, sounds better than a diesel.

If it were mine I'd go with a gen vi bbc with injection. Good torque and hp. Still reliable but uses a bit more gas than a lsx. But when loaded up with gear/people won't suffer as much as a smaller cube engine

Any idea on how buildable they are and still keeping factory fuel injection? It doesn't need to be a 10 second car (thats the other build), but we want something that works as a hot rod/cruiser, so it needs some power. All the fuel injected big blocks I've driven seem to be torque monsters but don't really make the truck that fast. And the 8.1 liters are weird bastard child engines with a real limited aftermarker.
