Camp site reserved, me and my skinny 33" all terrains are headed to Ironman Offroad for some final fine tuning next week, and my Creative Fab sliders are ready for any rocker-knocker obstacles you can throw at us.

I was informed today that my new Jeep may not be legal in Canada. Due to the fact that I do not have full inner fenders on the front of the Jeep. Is this going to be an issue?

Fab some with crazy carpet or old inner-tubes and I am fairly confident you will have no trouble. I have never heard of anyone around here being stopped to inspect inner fenders. I have however met people that have been stopped because their tires were not covered by the bodywork or flares...

You have now! WR and I and I think Tab and couple others.
It happend ~5 years ago or so. We were minding our own business in a caravan heading north on 17 around Buttermilk Rd. and the OPP passed us going south, they dam near rolled their cruiser trying to do a 'brake check/180'.
They pulled the whole group over and we were all cordial. They were looking to see what tire size we had, and if we were over a certain size (44" I think) we needed driveshaft loops and all vehicles needed inner front fenders. We never got a specific reason for the requirement, remember, we're foreigners here so we politely accepted their 'your free to go' and continued on our way. I think WR had a bit more specific conversation with the officer but we never got anything concrete to my knowledge.

I agree with BB though, just tie wrap some old rubber inner tubes to keep junk out of the engine compartment and you should be good to go.
Pic of alleged offender.

The OPP and MNR seem to be on a bit higher alert status during the fall than they are at other times of the year. Spring and summer runs never seem to attract attention. Every Fall we seem to hear stories.

I do know ALL your headlights must be working or they will nab you.

I alos remember Mike Haines pulling out of the campground and the OPP pulled him over probably a 1/4 mile down the road. Mike was a 'little less that street legal' with his buggy at the time and the officer shook his head and said go get a trailer and pick this thing up. I have no intention of spending my time writing all the violations you are guilty of. I would be here all night.

Sorry to hear you got hassled Jim... The cop must have been having troubles at home, but I'm glad he gave you a free pass. I know of an officer that answers specific questions pertaining to off-road use, and on/off road vehicles. I will ask him what the deal is and if he can quote me a specific statute.

Actually it wasn't OPP, it was Ministry. It was a guy up by the Indian Carver that told me it was an issue.

Ministry of Transportation?
I have asked the question of the officer. I expect to hear something back in the next few days, and will post the response.

Those rubber cut to fit deals you get from JC Whitney are cheap and actually can look OK. Remember I had them on the Jimmy until some deliquent trees made off with them.

That was the guy we talked to at the north end of the parking lot of the Carver who had ??property?? or something along those lines. He invited us to come see the trail he knew about. I think I marked it on my map but I certainly don't remember anymore.

So it was MNR then? Ministery of Natural Resouces, Right. I hope I got most of the facts correct. I couldn't remember who all was with us.

It will be interesting to see what BB contact has to say. It may be like our lift kit law is here. Some enforce, but it depends on the phase of the moon.

It was my group that was pulled over by the "Environmental Police" / OPP that were doing wheel well inspections, steering checks and tire size. Nice guys, however they were laying in wait for us to pass by. These stops were one of the major reasons we stopped doing GG and decided to go in smaller groups not advertised on public forums...

Arrow Question and response

This is what I got so far...

INITIAL REQUEST

Inner fender requirements for on-road use?
Some American friends were wheeling North of Sault Ste. Marie and were stopped by an OPP officer on hwy 17 about five years ago and were told that they needed inner fenders to be compliant for on-road use? I've known quite a few off-road enthusiasts that have modified vehicles that have never been stopped over inner fender coverage? Do you think my friends could not understand the Canadian accent, and were asked about flare coverage or is there a specific statute that deals with inner fenders?

There is a wheeling trip planned for the end of September in the same area and a few of the guys are concerned about being "inspected" while wheeling. They are trying to come up with something that they think will meet the requirements.

Thanks for your time, Jamie

Re: Inner fender requirements for on-road use?
Ok, I was just corrected, it was a Ministry of Transportation officer...

RESPONSE FROM OFFICER

Re: Inner fender requirements for on-road use?
I personally have never heard about legislation related specifically to inner fenders. I'm not saying it doesn't exist, but it would be a first for me hearing about it.

Normally I won't comment on something another Officer has done, but in this case I'm fairly confident that the discussion might have been more about mud flaps/fender flares and could have been misunderstood.

Cheers Opinions expressed are those of the author, accuracy of information posted cannot be guaranteed. These opinions in no way represent the OPP, any other Police Department or Police Officer.

If there is different information that I can provide him, I would be happy to correct it and see if it gets a different answer...

Jamie

I sure wish you guys would hurry up and get the straight poop on tire coverage and inner fender liners - this is really keeping me up at night.
