Why is my jeep overheating?

Info

-tj
-350/350/231
-Howell fuel injection w/670 Holley tbi
-new 180 degree thermostat
-new plugs
-new distributor
-new high volume water pump
-aluminum radiator
-electric fan hooked to a thermostat

Everything is working on it that I can see and you can only go 10 miles before it overheats. I am thoroughly confused and don't know what else to do.

have you check to see if the radiator is plugged?

Is the thermostat opening? Place it in water and slowly heat the water until you see it open and then measure the temp of the water.

This is the the thermostat that I pulled out of it. The previous owner put the motor in, it is a brand new jasper 350. He said the stat was new. It was jammed up inside the thermostat housing and I had to pull it out with pliers.

I put a new 180* stat in last night along with a new high volume water pump. I put them on and bled air out of the intake. The stat opened because at almost the same time the electric fan turned on the radiator got hot.

There is no heater in the jeep and the heater hose port on the water pump is just plugged, there is no bypass hose running from that to the intake. Is that an issue?

I drained all the coolant out and it looked great but I still put new in. It looks really clean inside so I don't think it is plugged.

It is mounted inside the engine compartment and it pulls air through the radiator into the engine compartment. No gaps, it is mounted correctly and I added a thermostat& relay to turn it on and off because it was just on a switch before. It turns on and off like it is supposed to.

When it gets hot the computer throws a "lean" code also. The timing is set at 16*.

Shroud around the electric fan? What kind of electric fan?

My YJ with a 350 was running hot with cheap electric fan. I switched it out for a electric fan out of a ford taurus. It solved my problem.

How does the spray pattern out of the injectors look? Running lean could defiantly cause it to run hot. Does it get hot idling? You said the previous owner installed the motor? I'm assuming the over heating is a new thing?

It has overheated since the day I got it. He bought the waterpump and I installed it. I am heading home right now to do some investigating. I think I have an idea what may be causing it but I will know more tonight. I think the thermostat housing is the wrong one and it allowed the stat to bend up into it and block the flow. I'm almost willing to bet that when I get home my new stat will be stuck up in the housing like the old one was. The po put that housing on it when he changed the motor and it was just one his dad had laying in his barn. He had barely driven the jeep since he put the motor in. He said it didn't overheat at the blessing and that was his last run with it. I think the stat wedged out of place between now and then. It is the only logical thing I can come up with.

I think it is running rich during normal operating times. It only gives a lean code after it gets hot. Looking at the injector pattern with a timing light I think it looks fine. But then again I am a mechanical retard

The old pump and the new one were both for a 327 which is the motor that was in the jeep prior to the 350. I asked the parts guy at napa and he said it should be the same direction of flow.

Does it make any difference if you don't have heat if you plug the ports or should you run a bypass hose?

I was wrong, the stat looked fine. I bought a new one and put it in and I am waiting for it to heat up and open to see if I am getting flow.

You can try running it without the stat to rule that out, but you said it did open so........

If the pump is spinning the correct way and the heater hose blocked off is not a prob then its either not enough air going through the rad, assuming it is spinning the correct way, or you could have a bad head gasket.

but are you running the same belt setup that was on the 327?

year doesn't matter with rotation of the pump, its the belt setup on the front of the engine.
