Default why not a ring gear spacer?

the dana 44's in tj rubicons can only be geared down to 5.13.
the 42rle in them has a .69 overdrive ratio, and uses alot of power to spin it.
many guys run 5.13's on 33" tires, and it works well.
i can get standard gears for the d44 in 5.89, that would be perfect for 37's
i have found 2 guys running 5.89's on rubicon lockers with ring gear spacers.
the rubicon wont see any serious abuse, mild trails and street only.
ring gear spacers are not uncommon in some other axles.

i already have selectable lockers, why not run them?

are ring gear spacers that bad?

opinions?
thx

been looking around, used to be more common in the jaguar and vette crowd to put 4.10's on their 3.73 and down diffs.

broken 44 gears can be shaved to become a spacer. its been done b4.

problem with spacers is that its now only the bolts driving the carrier and not a interference fit that the carrier and ring gear have, I have seen problems with the bolts backing off and egging holes out

thats a good point! i was under the impression the spacer was about .25 inches tall.
how tall is the lip the ring gear rides on the inside edge of the carrier?
if its under the height of the spacer, i could see the problem for sure!
what about tacking the spacer to the carrier to limit movement? or even tacking all 3 together? bad idea?

it is done on dana 30's 35's and 60's, what makes a 44 so different?

Do they make "thick cut" d44 gears?

I am running the thick gears in my 60.....no need to change carrier, no spacer

They do make thick d44 gears, but I've only seen them up to 5.13.

I remember the tj rear rubi lockers are junk and on 37's would make me want to change it anyway. Sell the factory lockers to someone on stock stuff and upgrade to the correct ratio lockers.

changing lockers is a possibility. i would like to keep my selectables, and not pay for new arb's though. im still looking at options. hicks used to sell a ring gear spacer for dana 44's.
it has been done.
