Judging by traffic and photos, and a few friends that like to go holiday weekends, yes, it's very packed.

Now you got the hot shots with their purchased $120k sand trails doing wheelies and launching off everything in sight in every direction too... if that wasn't a problem 5 years ago...

My sister was up there over the 4th, they said they didn't even need a voucher to get in... They said it wasn't packed, on the Holiday anyway.

On the 4th and 5th, you are correct. That Saturday was extremely busy, the beach was 3 deep at the boundry line, plus a double row in the middle on the driving lanes, test hill had people sitting on top and bottom almost across teh whole thing, making it slow moving to do full run thru's.

I think the off holiday weekends are not quiet as bad though, people are still going, but many have to go less, so they pick the holidays, plus some other random weekends.

Odds are, this.

he may have been wearing a chest protector, not alot of people do, but it would have distributed the load evenly across his body instead of just the point of impat.

he may have been dead when he fell off, who knows. Its tragic, its sad, its the reason i won't go out there without a cage around me.

If anything its busier. The economy doesn't seem to touch that place.

x2

Holidays are a waste of time if you are looking to hit the dunes to ride. If you like to watch people do stupid shit, then it's fun, but not worth it to me to stay hours in line to get a voucher.

Any other weekend is not bad at all. Most of the time you don't even need vouchers. Fridays and Saturdays are the busiest with most Sunday afternoons getting empty.

95% of "chest protectors" are designed to protect you from roost (dirt, rocks, etc)... not from impact, much less a quad landing on you...JS.
Always sorry to hear about these accidents, RIP.

yep.. and not a single one of them have spotters for jumping...

Im sure with a competent spotter this incident could've been avoided.. and no I'll bet a flimsy hunk of plastic strapped to his chest would not have saved his life.

120k......that is funny. What about the people in all kinds of vehicles parking on the back side of hills or going the wrong way in the directional area?

Not a single one has a spotter, maybe you should look around.

Where did it happen?
The ridge after Test Hill, far west end near the boundary stakes. This year there is a very steep gully that formed, 25 foot down & 20 foot up the other side with a very short transition valley. The sand there is very soft because it is the looser wind-blown sand. A lot of larger vehicles have caught and bent their front bumpers this summer going through it.

There is a lot of speculation and wrongfull assumptions in this thread by people who have no clue as to the terrain at that particular location. These two guys were out having fun, just driving around the dunes, they were not particularly jumping a hill. Unfortunately they were probably not aware of that deep gully at that spot, it takes you by surprise.

My condolences to the families of the victim, and to the victim's friend who now has to deal with the idea that he was involved with his friend's death.

That is what I was thinking when I read it initially..."Oh man, it could have been one of his friends."

That is going to require some therapy for all involved.

another one who should keep mouth closed...

Not always, but I do see groups standing around watching (and spotting) people doing jumps.

I've seen wild jumps both with and without spotters. Many of the long travel buggies like to show off at times when they shouldn't but this incident has nothing to do with that.

A couple kids were out having fun and a mistake was made. It's sad, but nothing more than an accident.
