Default Venting about the reason I hate unions

Dont' get me wrong here, I like my union. For the most part it has stood up for us.

And I guess with the good part comes with it bad parts. I just was in a confrontation with another worker and union member. I was in my office and he comes in asking if I knew where my overtime roster was. I said no, I don't need one since I am the only person in our division with my job title. He said who told me that and I told him our boss. With a smirk he says interesting and proceeds to call his son who happens to be a union rep. (side note: nobody thinks he should be able to have his son handle his complaints. Seems lke a huge conflict of intrest.) I asked him if he was trying to start more problems. (all he does is find things to get management in trouble for, instead of working) He then goes off and gets loud and takes a step closer toward me. I stand up out of my chair and ask him politely to please leave my office. He says when he is ready. I ask him nicely again. Again, when he is ready. So I jump on my phone and call my supervisor. Once I do he then walks out of my office and stands just outside my door. When I explain what is happening he says he isn't in my office really loudly. I then close and lock my door. All this while he is on the phone with his son. So his son should have been able to hear me asking for him to leave.

The reason I am worked up is because he and others like him are the ones who give unions bad names and they are protected because of the union. They can't get in trouble because the union will fight for them just as the fight for me. These guys play the game so well that they can get away with anything. They look for things to bitch about or ways to get around stuff so they don't have to work as hard as the other people and yet still get paid the same.

The kicker is this guy and two others have bitched and complained and grieved management so much, the union doesn't want anything to do with them anymore either but they have to. Most of the stuff the write grivences about get dismissed but the time it takes to write them, and go to arbitration, and meetings, wastes so much time and money it is rediculous.

Sorry for venting. I am just pissed. I wrote everything that happened down too so I have a record in case he says I did something.

Yep, unions suck. I managed teamsters before with same issues you mentioned. We caught a person on video and in person filling up there personal vehicle with gas on a company charge account with complete documentation. We called in the person showed them what we had with his union rep and told him to quit or we would press charges.......short story long, he didn't quit and union fought it for over a year while the thief worked and got paid until it was settled with a short suspension.

I got out after that.

Unions suck.

Yup, that story right there is why i dislike unions. They once had their place, and I'm sure do to some point, but there is no reason they should "protect" workers like that.

I was recently fired for farting on our shuttle vans, apparently I had been spoken to 8 (1) other times and enough was enough. Union got me back on 1 year probation. Others that get fired for missing work, damaging company property, damaging customer property get fired and brought back time and time again.... I'm really on the fence about how I feel about unions. My fellow union members are all in there early 20s and don't actively participate in the union nor do they realise what it is really for, they just think it's there for if they get fired and let management walk all over them.

That totally sucks, I have assholes like that. It sure seems the union spends the most effort protecting the pond scum that gives them a bad name.

I got my job because the previous mechanic was caught on camera putting gas out of our truck mounted tank into his personal vehicle. The union fought it but he lost.

It sounds like my work experience at the Rouge plant. Complacency happens really fast. Our Hall pretty much just collected money and did nothing about legitimate complaints.
The benefits were nice though.

unfortunately, the union must also stand up for the loosers in the most obvious of cases. otherwise they can be sued by the member for "failure to represent"

i recently attended a Michigan Teachers Union golf scholarship outting. the host introduced a state rep who was in attendance and said "we have a lot of work to do" (with respect to upcoming elections). as i was a guest of a friend, i had to keep my mouth shut. but i was thinking......what lot of work has to be done? no mention of students, academics, teacher credentials, etc. the union uses member dues as they see fit. am not aware they get any sort of membership approval to support specific political candidates or proposals.

this is truely "failure to represent".

As a part time Firefighter, I belong to a union. I hate it. The mentality and aggression some of my coworkers display is mind boggling. The "You owe me" mentality is very strong.

Unions suck hind tit. I used to work for the Post Office and they are the worst unions around. Working at the Post Office you do not have to join the union and I did not until I wanted to file a grievance. I felt that if I was going to file I should be a union member although not required). I joined, filed the grievance and because of the stewards lack of knowledge it was lost. I stayed a member for a few years until I could not take it any more. Every time I went to the union it was always "management has the right to do that". I told the craft director one time that he needed to get out of managements back pocket. I finally got out of the union and retired shortly after.

Unions had their place at one time, but they got too big for their britches. They have demanded so much over the years and now it is biting them in the ass. Look at Twinkies, they went out of business because the unions refused to give any concessions to save the company.

Enough of my rant, I could go on for hours but will stop now.

I'm not a fan of Unions either. I'm glad to see not all union members are brainwashed enough to say that unions are the best thing in the world. I have a few on my facebook and when ever I post something anti-union we go around and round about how "with out unions you wouldn't have benefits or minimum wage" or "you wouldn't have safe working conditions".....All true statements but if we got rid of unions today those thing wouldn't disappear.

I worked for a few unions (stage hand, meijer, support staff) and really didn't see any benefit and mostly saw the restrictions they put on people willing to go the extra mile. That's could just be my experience though.

I much rather prefer being able to climb the ladder by showing my work ethic and not by how many years I've been loyal to someone who takes my money.

I am a union member. Unions as a whole suck. My rep from Local 514 is a good guy. The reps from Local 9 are good dudes but don't seem to ever accomplish anything, and the people in Ohio #46 can blow me. I have had good and bad expieriences with dealing with the "union brothers" and the guys who are there to work hard and feed their families. Depends on the individual. But a large majority unfortunatley are assholes.
