Default advice ?

im looking at possibly buying this 1978 Ford Bronco Ranger XLT . 6.6 400M 30 over Rebuilt transmission, rebuilt drive shaft, New radiator, new alternator,
new starter.

anyway before i go look at it, need a little advice and education, i want this to basically mild build into a dune truck for silver lake.

so with all of the extensive knowledge and experience on here, i need to know what to look for in this thing,

how do i tell if its got dana axles, a 9 inch, any of that ? and did the 78 bronco come with a straight front or IFS.

yeah i know dumb questions, but i have never really had the chance to get into this type of thing, now in my 40s its time and im as dumb as a lug nut when it comes to what i should look for. so any advice would be greatly appreciated. also im looking at 1,500 bucks or under for this. if i can jew his ass down. thanks

pretty sure the late 70s bronco will have a D44/9" combo.

more than good enough for the dunes, but would still upgrade a few areas anyway.

get pics of what's underneath it and we can tell you for sure what it has in case something was changed.

Honestly offer someone in your area who knows something about them dinner and beer if they come with you to look at it, I think that might be the best idea. There are some good people on this site. A few years back I picked up a guy in lansing and we drove to detroit to look at and buy a jeep for him. He bought me dinner and paid for my gas.

The oldest trick in the book is for the seller to say. "It has a rebuilt trans".

The proper response is "can I have the paperwork/reciept for warranty purposes?"

9 times out of 10 the seller will fumble around and say "my buddy did it" or "I lost the paperwork" which is usually a way of saying "I lied to you" or "It's a junkyard tranny"

all 78 and 79 broncos will have a hi pinion 44 front, and a 9" rear.
unless they have been swapped, that is probably rare.

I would try to make sure the Bronco actually has the 400m and not the 351m, I remember seeing a statics that only 30% or so had the 400m.

The 351/400 engines seem to cause a lot of confusion, most people seem to think that the "351/400m" is an engine, not two...and they think their 351m is 400 modified!

I'm not sure if there is an easy way to tell the difference, I think going off casting numbers is the only way.

In the two dozen or so 78-79 broncos and Ford Trucks I've had experience with, all the autos were 351 with 3.55 gears and all the sticks were 400 with 4.10 gears. Not sure if that was always the case, but seems to be around here.
