Brakes do not work in reverse

Been along time since I have posted, Been lurking forever...

I have a weird problem with my 97 F250 diesel...

Went to the east side over last weekend and while there noticed that when I back up and apply the brakes the pedal will get stiffer with every push After about 2 or 3 pumps of the brake pedal while rolling in reverse will cause it to get very stiff and will not stop the truck... Also if I keep at it the ABS and brake lights come on. If I put it in drive everything works normal.

Truck has had all new rear brake shoes, drums, springs and wheel cylinders. They have been adjusted over and over and I have checked everything and it all looks ok...

I am out of ideas and any input would be greatly appreciated

how do you know it is the rear? the front brakes alone should stop the truck at low speeds without the driver knowing anything is wrong with the rears.

Good point I have no real idea why I am thinking of the rear but that is the only thing I can think of that would have anything to do with the problem. Like the shoe grabbing and pulling something... I cant see how anything with the calipers would cause this problem but I could be wrong...

It can't hurt to check the front, if nothing seems wrong with the rear. Could have a broken locating pin that's causing it to bind on the rotor? Haven't heard of anything like this before. Maybe take it to a shop that has identifix access and have them search it.

It could be something to do with the ABS. I have no idea what but its possible.

Check the rear backing plate bolts that attach the backing plate to the axle.. I had a similar problem with a 1995, the bolt holes were egged out and the backing plate would twist and the rear brakes would never stay in adjustment.

Sounds like you are losing vac. to the booster in reverse, maybe a cracked vac. hose that flexes just right in reverse? Maybe a weak vac. pump but not sure why it would only act up in reverse. Bad vac. pumps on diesels are kinda common.

Have you tried pumping the pedal while rolling forward? maybe it will act up as well and you just have not noticed it yet??

Ive had the Master brake cly go bad on me and have the brake pedal push to the floor, didn't matter though, as far as losing it in reverse. Look for wet/brake fluid on or near the firewall? Also possible the vac booster, or hose(or rubber grommet) to it is leaking when brakes are applied.
