Default I was gonna join the military but....

After seeing more AJ bashing and reading a thread like it on another forum I was curious. What are the best and lamest excuses my brothers in arms have heard from people about why they didn't join the military?

I think the best one I heard was right after bootcamp, I was home on leave and a guy noticed my sweet haircut (read buzzed head) and uniform and said he was going to but he knew he would probably knock a DI out if he got in his face. I promptly laughed and walked off.

What are some of the excuses you all have heard?

I used to be a recruiters assistant for a while. I actually had a female that was to skinny to join. She was six one and 130 lbs. She would come to our PT formations where we made her sit on the bleachers and eat an MRE. The funniest one I think I've heard though.... "well I took the test and didn't score high enough for the job I wanted, so I told the recruiter to change my score and he wouldn't! If he really wanted me to join he would've just switched the score! It's not that big of a deal." (he wanted to become a medic) lol

I don't listen to excuses!

Seriously though... after working with the Marine Corps Monitors for a couple of years fixing all the recruiter fukc-ups between the time they would go to boot camp and their MOS training, I wish more people had made up a lame excuse and stayed away.

My excuse was I was turned down after going to enlist when I was 17 after 9/11. I had a bone spur and hairline fractures in one of my vertebrae that forced me to quit football and wrestling in high school the year before. Never pursued it any further than that.

I've heard everything from "I don't want to die" to "well my girlfriend doesn't want me to leave" some of the reasons are just completely ridiculous. I'd say about sixty percent of the time is from people just being scared of the change in lifestyle.

I was going to join! I swear! My dad was a lifer in the Army. His life advice to me was to either military, college, or a skilled trade and don't share you cars or women with your friends.

After long thought I hated all the moving around we did. I started out in college, but was too short minded to see past my nose so I got into a skilled trade instead!

My two best friends growing up joined the Air Force and the other the Navy. I went with Army National Guard because I liked being home. Now I'm in Alabama training to become a pilot. Seems like it's working out so far

Nice save, cuz I definitely got a bit of a D-bag impression from the first post. I have a big problem with the people who think they're better than civilians because they served. Don't get me wrong, I have a lot of respect for the troops and what they do, the risks they take, and the sacrifices they make, but the superiority complex bugs the sh1t out of me. You're not better than me because you served any more than a white collar execurtive is better than blue collar worker; we all made a choice with our paths but that doesn't define who we are. I've known some great, honorable military members who get nothing but respect from me, but unfortunately I've known just as many who were lowlifes and joined cuz they had no other options.

As for me, I didn't serve. I chose college and a career because that's what I was always brought up planning/expecting to do. Military was never really a big consideration for me. If it had been, my parents probably would've tried to talk me out of it....they're the types who worry about everything and would've expected the worst.

Yea I figured when I started seeing some guys saying why they didn't join that I might want to make sure everyone knew I was NOT asking people on here why they didn't join. I saw a similar thread in another forum I frequent and was curious what some of the funny reasons people have told other guys who were in the military
