How does sexual orientation disqualify one from being a teacher?

It doesn't.

There, we agree on something! The world really is coming to an end.

Although I have no desire to see a cross dresser teaching at my kids school.

I do agree that many students today have no respect for their teachers but this whole subject should have never been brought up in class. I would never want a school teacher teaching the virtues of gay marriage to my kids. That's something I will handle at home at my discretion.
missed the part about the affidavits from kids.

http://www.ratemyteachers.com/johnso...ell/421060-t/1 Not like this has any merit in the discussion, but here is his judging by his students. I didn't read anything about "gay marriage" just "homo agenda", which is sensationalist BS to mean anything from mentioning the word gay to full up gay sex acts on students. Kinda like how assault weapon means anything from a 10/22 to a AK47.

Am I trying to justify what he said? No, because I don't know what he said to piss of this kid. This kid may have been a a little Aber and even mentioning gay would make him say a hail mary. Personally I'd rather have him hear about homosexuality as part of a health class, and a hear about religion in a philosophy class. It gives the kid a better world view coming out of school. At least they know about the stuff then rather than have the kids not know and turn out like the kids in the Idiocracy movie.

It is not the job of any public school teacher to teach anything about homosexuality. Even in health class.

Meh, its gonna come up in highschool. I'd rather it come up and either be discussed or downplayed, than it not discussed at all. It can do way more damage by not discussing it than discussing it in a structured environment.

Bingo. End of discussion.

I'm in total agreement that a teacher is to be shown respect. But when a teacher starts pushing a political agenda to someone who is old enough to know it is wrong, I support the student pushing back.

There was a story sometime back about a teacher that was teaching the reason behind 911 is because the United States is a bully. He needs his ass beat.

X 2 on Stan's comments.

What troubles me the most though is the whole trend in this country today...

Kid chews a Poptart into a gun shape and gets suspended.

Kid wears NRA shirt to school and has a problem.

Parrish in Louisiana loses federal funding for an after school intervention program because he won't strike the reference to God in the Young Marine's oath.

This isn't the same place where I grew up

I don't think someone [a teacher] should be presenting arguments for or against the "act" of homosexuality, but I think that it's a perfectly acceptable topic to be discussing in a HS political science/civics class. I mean, gay marriage is basically a major topic in our current political landscape at the moment.

The best thing for a teacher to do in this scenario is to present a topic and allow the students to come to their own conclusions based on research and discussion. In education, we are getting away from rote memorization of names, dates, laws, and going to learning about subjects using critical thinking. The best way to sum this up is a good teacher will teach a student how to think, not what to think.

So, say in a civics class, the topic of gay marriage comes up. A student says, I don't think gay marriage should be allowed because I'm catholic and it's against my religious beliefs. This is the perfect opportunity for the teacher to turn a hot topic into an interesting discussion that might actually capture the attention of the students who may otherwise be tuning out. Well, that's a legitimate opinion Timmy, what do you think class? Should religious beliefs be taken into consideration when dealing with constitutional isssues, laws, etc.? Inevitably you'll have a healthy dose of opinions, which inevitably will lead to more discussion, which can springboard into a project in which the students perform research, interpret their data, and present their arguments for / against...etc.

One of the biggest challenges for a teacher is getting students engaged. Risque/politically charged topics like gay marriage, death penalty, 2nd amendment can be a great way to do that.

Gay rights are not a topic that needs to be discussed in school.

I want my kids learning how to make it to college, get a job, get a trade, know how to handle finances, know how our government works, etc.

NOT be talking about social issues that have nothing to do with the 3 r's.

I'm surprised you didn't use the word "whippersnapper".

Social issues are a part of what our government does.

Gay rights are the new civil rights. History is happening before our very eyes.

Gotta agree with Mike here.

I had a "Current Issues" class in high school, and there's no doubt this would have been discussed.
