Default engine

Dont waste your money on a used one that was a bad year for the 4.0 a lot of them had bad piston problems. on the 02 4.0 there was a block change and there isnt much you can use but that year I got lucky and found a core for my 02 wrangler to rebuild. a used one can cost well over a grand to 1400 with 100000 on it you can do a short block for around 900 and a long block for around 1800

Really? I haven't heard of any 4.0s having problems. If its gonna cost that much to rebuild it or buy a used one I will probably just do an engine swap

Early 2000s 4.0s are shit, several different problems. Look at jeeps for sale from that era, most everything over 120k has a replaced motor. The good days of the 4.0 were in the 90s, after that everyone thinks they are the same, but far from it

Rebuild yours then you know what you are getting and you know your accessories will fit with no problems.

I rebuilt mine last year. Had 181,000 on it. Having someone else do the work i had 1400 in it. Picked it up, dropped it in and has been running great ever since. I also thought about an engine swap but to do the 5.3 liter and have it done right would have cost way more money and been down alot longer.

wow, when I called around our area last year most places were over 2k for a rebuild. wound up finding a wrecked jeep with a motor that only had 10k on a rebuild. It was getting close to going your route, given the price of the engines I was finding

I believe the 2001-2004 Grand Cherokee and TJ 4.0 motors are compatible with each other and would be a direct fit if you went that route but if you choose an XJ 4.0 motor you'll have to swap parts over to the TJ motor because the mounts are different.
