Why aren't you looking at using either a Dodge 5.9 or 5.7 hemi? Then you'd have power, could use your manual, and the gauges would still work.

Seems like the best of all possible combos.

While the second paragraph talked about an auto, the first is not auto specific. I was specifically thinking of my 1975 CJ5, when I wrote it.

One of those things that, on paper, looks like piss-poor gearing. 3.73 gears, T15 3 speed with a 3:1 first gear, and a Dana 20 t-case with 2:1 low range, with 34" tires. About 1/2 the overall gearing of my TJ before it. Buuut, it was extremely well matched.

One, the CJ5 was much lighter than the TJ. I suspect that the 304 made around similar horsepower to the 4.0, but more like 250-275 ft-lbs.

Two, and more important, was that first gear gave me a gear with about 200-230 rpm per MPH, which is something of a sweet spot for most Jeep engines. Basically, you want a high of gearing as possible that you can still lug.

With that setup, I could lug down to 300rpm or so, but still spin the tires up when in mud, if I needed to. I never needed to shift. Put it in 1st gear when you got to a climb/mud hole/snow pile, and leave it alone.

Had I put in something like 4.10 or 4.56 gears, I'd have helped low rpm crawling, but hurt the performance in those most common 'michigan' wheeling situations, where I needed RPM. I'd need to shift 3/4 of the way up hills, which sucks.

So, yeah, a well shifting transmission helps, in momentum scenarios. But if you are doing that very often, you should be asking why you've set up a Jeep that requires a shift at that point.

Man, didn't even think about those. They have probably come way down in price now that they are older. I should look into this more so I can race the stroker I6 world record holder on 33's with 4.10 gears and pine tree air freshener guy.

I know they all bolted up to the same bellhousings.

Yep, and I know the 3.9 Dakota AX-15 bellhousing will allow a 4.7/5.2/5.9 to bolt up to the NV3550. Just use clutch setup from the donor engine.

For instance, when I had the Dodge 4.7 V8 in my Wrangler, I just used the 3.9 bellhousing, and the PCM, flywheel, clutch, and pressure plate from a 2002 Dakota. Gauges worked and everything bolted up.

I've never analysed it all that closely. My 4.0L/NV3550/NP231/8.8w/4.10/33inch tires seems to work reasonably well, but I still like that I have a short throw shifter for quicker shifts.

It has to be a stock jeep on 31's with the of road skids and mono tube shocks with and aftermarket CD player, seat covers and new air fresheners or it's not really a fair race. We will race to 10' and see who is laughing......I bet you miss a shift!!!!!

What doesnt add up? The fact that most people on here are full of shit and have no real world exsperience building horsepower.
Most V8s people put in jeeps make less power then a well built stroker but assholes who have never built one have no fucking clue. They talk shit. Try that in my local bar and you end up a bloody mess. But here it is easy because you are protected by your keyboard.

I quit going to bars full of young punks with no respect because Im a hot head. I had boxer fractures twice in my right hand and once in my left in a two year period. It cost me thousands in court costs, fines, and lost wadges. Im lucky I didnt end up with a felony. If I new where the douchbag lived that keeps running his mouth I would likely be on my way to jail by now for beating the cousin fucker out of him. If I stick around it's just a matter of time before I will jeperdize my future and it aint worth it. Maybe I have grown up because five years ago I wouldnt care. Maybe not.

I started coming here because I enjoy wheeling and thought I would meet others that do also. All I see is a bunch of assholes just like everyone warned me about.

I have no use for people who dont respect others and that is 90% of the people here.

Good for you, want a cookie?

Its the tone of your posts that make people want to jab ya.
Please show me where I said I could beat any v8........ I said I have not been beat by a V8 yet except once when I missed a gear.
The only reason I even mention my motor, racing, or jeep is because of all the idiots that think a V8 swap is the only way to go if you want more power. These assholes should spend a little time building motors before they open their mouth.
The tone of my post change when I am called a lier, which is what people are insinuating.
Im not a lier. Well unless Im tryin to get in your pants.

MY jeep is not fast. It weighs 4000lbs with me in it and runs very well for a 6 cyl. Is it wrong to be proud of a inline six that has schooled many, many V8 trucks, jeeps, and two 4.6 mustangs? I guess I would rather be proud and wrong then a fucking asshole like most of the people here. You have always seemed pretty cool, Im not calling You an asshole.

I enjoy a little jab once in awhile. I will even miss kickstand fucking with me but the nonstop slamming doesnt sit well with me. I will get violent and I have a house to pay for so I dont need this bullshit. I have spent enough time and money " correcting" people with big mouths in the past so It's best if I gtfo before I get angry and in jail.

I have piles of respect for many people I have spoken with, but not you. You attempt to command respect, good luck.

Teasing and being a raging ass hole are 2 different things. Ill take a quick witted smartass over a "I'm awesome and I demand your respect" jackass any day (that's you).

I'm going to meijer to buy 2 cases of beer, I'll be happy to race you! win or lose I'll drink one with you. This is an INTERNET FORUM!
