Tending to agree. SUPs are OK on downwind trips or farting around up and down the beach playing in the surf, but for the money I would rather have a decent sea kayak or a pair of recreational boats. You can do a lot more with them - like paddle for a few miles at a time with some gear on board and not be too tired to do anything for the rest of the day.

the whole point of the SUP for me is for fitness. If I want to cover ground I have a 20 ft inboard for that.

We rented them in Florida. They are ridiculously slow, like paddling around on a big sheet of plywood. Its a good workout for your upper body and abs. And I suppose it helps to build balance too. Overall, I thought it was really boring and probably won't do it again. Its hard for me to believe that they seem to be the new rage for any other reason than because they are the new thing that everybody wants to try.

They are the latest "thing", some people love it and I am very happy for them. To me it looks like the worst combination of surfing and kayaking. I want my surf board on waves and to be sitting in my kayak. I am sure it is good exercise though.

I can't imagine how much a "real" board is. When we were looking at kayaks Dunhams had some made by Pelican, same material as their kayaks, and they were as much or more than the kayaks.

I MAY get to sneak a ride in Thursday night. If I do I'll shoot you a message.

Next week I have to go out of town for work. Then we're up to marquette for the bike jame on the 28th-30th, hoping to go to Plattekill NY for the 6,7th for a DH race. If I can pull that off I probably won't ride much in between, I'll be looking to recover, but with the 4th being on thursday I'll have the day off and may go out for a ride.

There is a place in Walled Lake renting them and giving lessons, but I'll probably just stick with my kayaks.

It is a great tool for fitness with proper training and technique. 85% of my fitness training comes from Stand Up Paddleboarding, both leasurly paddling, race training and racing as well as Paddle Fit classes (a fusion on board and land fitness).

I am actually a PaddleFit 2 certified coach and we do classes in the Howell area (mostly Island Lake and Brighton on a regular basis but other lates as well) I love the sport - it's a great way to get out on the water, focus on fitness in ways beyond simply paddling.

I own a Hovie board with a displacement hull. I also raced on a Hovie Comet raceboard last summer and may race on it again for some races this year. There are a lot of options including some that are hand made here in Metro Detroit. With boards you do get what you pay for- and I can offer lots of advice specific to your needs. Basically there are 3 styles: Surf, Displacement, and Race. I wouldn't recommend getting a Race board for anything other than racing if you were looking for a universal board.

I'm not going to say that SUP is greater than kayaking or canoeing, they all offer different benifits, but I do love how I can take my paddleboard just about anywhere and manage it by myself as they are a lot lighter than most kayaks. For me the board is more versatile too than a kayak would be for me personally since I can practice fitness including yoga.

What I really would ask is that anyone interested in trying the sport out PLEASE talk to someone with experience and can give you proper training including safety. There are some businesses in this area that neglect safety issues and they are putting their clients at risk, and with out the proper training you may also be vulnerable to injury. We even saw one local company leading a class and the instructor was paddling the board backwards, yes the instructor.

I would guess either you were on a terrible board and possibly a poor introduction to the technique making it difficult and frustrating.

I get it, you enjoy your board. I'd rather be stuck running on a treadmill, and I absolutely despise running.
