Default ground hogin

I am at my favorite hill top with two brush piles in the middle of the neighbors field with my long range pellet rifle sticking out of my mobile hunting shack.

Who else splatters punksitawny?

Why would you pick on a ratt?

It depends, was he swimming and how far of a shot relative to caliber???

Will a pellet gun kill a woodchuck?
I shot one with a 20 gauge, hit it ,found blood. 2 days later it was back mocking me.

We hunt anything that farmers will let us . The wife thinks something wrong with me I just tell her its a hobby. I was riding with the neighbor last fall telling him how many woodchucks I shot. We crested a hill and two were in the beans and he said I may need another shooter. I need to work harder this year...
.17 fireball

.17 mach2

Another .17 fireball

Edit to add a prairie dog for good measure.

He comes around and digs up the bank and then I have a hard time cutting the grass and get stuck from time to time.
As far what I am shooting it is a Gamo Rocket 1250 fps at around 75 to 100 feet. Any farther they tend to bounce off him or the water.

I spotted a guvinile chuck in my soy beans an hour ago. I have a table 308 and a Budweiser. His ass is grass.

Major disapoitment.
I zeroed or checked zero on this rifle Friday after work on a paper target. In the last half hour I missed a crow at 80 yards and a chuck at about 125. I am number. I have perfect bench and every thing was perfect on the chuck. Dirt flew behind. It went right over. Fudge.

I usually wait till they get far enough from their hole and sprint at them with my ruger mk3.
If you get within a few feet of them they dont know where to go and panic.
Easy pickins and gets the adrenaline flowing pretty good to.
Still need to have the girl friend video it sometime though

I hit one with a rn .22lr years ago and he looked at me like "That's all you got?". My roommate at the time had his grandpa's old .22 Hornet, that did a lot more than just piss them off, bit still nice and quiet. We shot a lot of 'chucks with that gun.

Were you shooting downhill , different wind or off a different bench ? A 308 at that distance shouldnt be bothered by wind much but a bipod on a springy bench top may make a difference? And of coarse there is always chuck fever and you rushed the shot :banghead:

Wrong ammo.

I shot right over them, the crow I understand, the ground hog I did not.

I had changed from CBC M-80 ball, which zeroed the same as the Horniday 168 match.

I had the thing loaded with Horniday 150 super performance. They were a touch over 3-inches high at 180 yards, not sure at the shorter distance.

Changed back to the cheap shit, took the screen out of the pole barn window tonight.

After the rain blew over I killed three of the bastards in less than an hour. I have pictures and they will not load.

Just got this one from a counted 114 paces from our elevated deck, Standing in the soybeans. First shot was a little low at this distance. When she popped back out 5 minutes later I put the cross just above her head and had a head shot. Got her with a 1967 Marlin 39a Golden (.22LR) that was originally my Great Uncles. Celebrating with an Oddsides Citra pale ale.

Walked it to the back of the field against a small woods and threw it in. Those little federal hydra shock hollow points do pretty good.

Shot another this after noon, this time with a match target round,

Note, match target rounds suck for killing things.

It ran around in three circles then drug it self back into the brush pile.

Back in the barn window looking over the bean field. All the corn is to tall to look over. Pickins are getting slim here. I have not seen one in a couple of settings. I am sure there is one more. So I wait.
