Default Vehicle Repair Law??

I took my boat in for service last week, explained to the owner the problem I was having. He told me they should be able to diagnose the problem with in an hour. The shop rate is $65.00 an hour, so I was expecting them to diagnose the problem and call me to authorize any further repair. I did not sign anything when I dropped the boat off, I though that was a little odd. They called today and said I owe them almost $400.00, replaced two parts plus labor and materials. It seems to me that they would have to call me authorize the purchase of parts and labor time. I am planning to go get the boat tomorrow but will be having a conversation with the owner before I just pay $400.00 worth of repair that I did not authorize.

Any thoughts on the matter would be great.

The times i have taken a vehicle to a shop, they always call and tell me what is wrong, and an estimate. Then then ask if i want to go ahead and have them do it, or have them just put it back together.

For any repair over $20 you are supposed to have a written estimate. You must sign the estimate in order for them to do any repairs on it. If the amount of repairs exceed the original estimate they are supposed to call you for an approval.

Does it make any difference because it is a boat?

I am almost positive it is the same. I know a couple people that own boat repair facilities and I can ask them if you need me to.

if you could ask them that would be great. I was looking at the law and it says motor vehicle (self propelled) it does not make any mention of a car or boat. I would have to guess they fall under the same repair shop rules and regulations.

If you got anything fixed on a boat for only $400 I'd just shut up and pay the man!

I am hoping this is some little lund with a 25hp on the back. if you tell me this is anything over 19' and at least an I/O then pay the $400 and bring the guy some beer as well so he will take care of you next time.

in answer to your question it is a little gray area when it comes to marine and I know this as I used to be in the biz back there and I have seen this go both ways in the past. the fact you found someone who has a shop rate of only $65 an hour I am guessing this is a small shop and the guy is doing good just to get by. dont be a dick about it but tell him nicely next time call me first before moving forward so you can budget accordingly.

PA300 of 1974 does not apply to boats.

It sounds like you got your boat fixed for free!

But no. You know what boat stands for. A $400 fix is cheap and I wouldn't haggle with the man. Just let him know that before he conducts business with anybody else, he might want to check with the customer first before doing any work.

Agreed.

But for perspective: What problem did you have? What parts did they replace?
