Default Buying a new phone on Ebay / online

School me. I are dum.

I've got an old Droid X that is about to die, but I don't want to get a new one from Verizon and re-up my contract. I would lose my grandfathered unlimited data and I don't want to be tied into another 2 years.

With my Droid, can I buy any other Droid, transfer my information, and be good to go? Are there still SIM cards in these things that I would need to transfer?

Can I buy another phone, like a Samsung? How about iPhone?

Things to think about to back up data before doing this?

What am I missing? Thanks!

You can still keep your unlimited data and get a new phone directly from Verizon...the only thing is you pay full price for the phone.

But your contacts and shit should all be on your google account so you can basically just get a new phone, wipe it, then set it up for you. Obviously you will lose some stuff, but the important things will be attached to your google account.

The new 4G phones have SIM cards again. At least my Rzr Max does...

Just back up your contacts to google, put your pictures/music/videos on your memory card. Activate the new phone, put your card in it and sync your google account to get your contacts on the new phone. Just did this with the wife's phone, only thing we lost was saved games.

Cool, thanks guys. Do you know if I need to get a "Verizon" phone or are they all interchangeable?

We got a used Verizon phone just to make sure. I think if you get one that is 'unlocked' you'd be ok, otherwise I would stick with a Verizon one just to be sure.

i hate cell phones.

anywho, when you're buying a used phone online you need to get the electronic serial number (esn) off the phone before you purchase it and contact verizion and see if it's possible to get the phone activated, sometimes people will default on their bill and have phones that are still on an account and can't be switched because the account is in default.

Thanks for the heads up, good info.

Do you know if Verizon charges you or makes you re-up to change your ESN? That would kind of defeat my purpose...

I've bought used "dumb" phones on ebay and switched them online with no cost to do so.

This happened to me when I bought a used GS3 on Craigslist. Sprints customer service couldn't check the number at the time I bought it, and I almost got bit. Lol, the seller was a tranny hooker on Backpage, that had me meet at a sleazy motel parking lot.

Thanks for all of the info!

Still have a question on if I went to iPhone. Would this make it any tougher, or is it all the same with Google backup?

Yeah but you signed a new two year contract right? I am trying to avoid doing that by purchasing a phone privately, not through Verizon.

Yes, But if you go in there with a 4g or an iphone they may make you.

If its a 3g new or used they can't. Idk if they consider iphone 3 or 4g.
