Default Is resurfacing rotors/drums a lost art?

Every time I've taken in a rotor or drum to get it resurfaced, in Alpena, I was told that they can't be turned. Never once was a micrometer pulled out and looked at, it was a simple, yet definite, no can't be done.

Am I missing something? I know that there are min specs for them to be turned on, and all the rotors that I've taken in had maybe 30k and change on them, one set had 10k; the pads cracked and broke apart. I remember back in high school that you could get rotors and drums turned for about $20 a set; I figured it would be a little more expensive now, but I didn't expect for no one to do it at all

Maybe alpena just sucks, I don't know

Some places still do, but you would swear they used a brick as the cutting insert to turn the rotors!

I would say about 30% of rotors people bring in are turntable. If you can see they went metal to metal 99.9% aren't turntable, but I take out a mic and check them. Also, about 98% of drums are turntable.

It is and isn't... 1 ton and 3/4 ton rotors are turnable but a lot of people just pad slap nowadays... You can buy rotors for nearly what it costs to turn rotors for majority cars and SUVs...

One huge thing to keep in mind insurance costs for repair/machine equipment are very high due to liability in this sue happy insurance market... It doesn't justify the cost and the upkeep of the equipment...

I think that most of the Chinese junk rotors sold at stores aren't good for even one turn.

Our local NAPA stores will tell you they can turn them for you, but they have to send them over to the warehouse on Patterson to do it. I splurge a bit on rotors. The last couple could have been turned, but I simply took them home and shelved them. I figured I either have them for spares or for scrap. I get a good enough discount at NAPA and Parts Plus that buying new hardly breaks the bank though.

A lot of OEM rotors can not be turned. They are designed to be single use (not enough material to turn). Any decrease in rotating mass helps the EPA numbers.

When I was machining rotors in 2001, the TIR spec from mounting face of the rotor to the brake surface was .009mm. I wouldn't want to try to turn rotors to that spec on my lathe.

The cheap (exspensive/ junk) metal used to make rotors nowdays is harder to get a quality cut on in my exsperiece. They dont seem to stay true as well. That, along with the fact that rotors rust and deteriorate on surfaces that cant be turned make it easier to just buy new.
You can turn a rotor and still end up with a shimny or viberation because the cooling fins can rust away and throw the rotor out of balence. Twenty or thirty years ago you would never notice a unbalenced rotor because cars were not that smooth. Now cars are so refined you notice everything.
For most shops it doesnt make sence to turn when they can just slap on new ones and charge you the same $100 per hr. Plus mark up the cost of parts.

oh, and they are cheaper.

The first I remember the no turn rotors was on a VW my wife had while we were dating. Good to see everybody catching up to VW's quality.

Vw quality? Thats a good one. If only the rest of their car had such quality. Like timing belts on interference motors. Or water pumps. Or window regulators. Or..............

I worked in a vw shop off and on for 15yrs and I cant put quality and water cooled vw in the same sentence.
