Default This Spanish language brainwashing is starting to annoy me...

This is a little bit of a rant, and I mean no disrespect to the Hispanic population.

I'm at Meijer yesterday grocery shopping, and decided to see what baby toys were there for my 6 month old niece for x-mas. I come across this one that's like a little keyboard with colored keys and you press the key to hear the color. Well on one end of the key is the English word, and the other end is the Spanish word, and it switches off saying it in either English or Spanish. WTF is this shit?

Crap like this and Dora the Explorer seems like it's just preparing our kids to accept the fac that no one is going to be speaking English in this country in 20 years. I'm starting to get a little sick of it, not to mention all the other crap like Chevy's Spanish commercial and what not. Pretty soon road and street signs will be in Spanish.

There's nothing wrong with catering to others in this Country, because that's what it is all about. But this country is the MELTING pot, not the sectioned off pot. When my ancestors and relatives came to this country in large numbers, no one starting trying to learn Ukrainian and Polish to cater to them. They learned English so they could better assimilate themselves into this country and culture. By no means did they have to throw their entire culture in the garbage. Pretty soon traditional American whose family has been here for awhile is going to be forgotten about, and I see something wrong with that.

I know someone's response to this will be that if I was in another country, I'd get pissed if they didn't speak English. In all honesty, no I wouldn't. That's like getting pissed when you go over to someone's house and they don't do things the way you think they should. That just isn't right. It just so happens that in many tourist parts of the world, people do speak English and other languages for the tourists. That makes sense, since it's all to make money. But by no means would I expect them to cater to my ass. If I was in Italy, I'd keep some type of language translator with me so I could at least do the basics in their language.

Ok, I'm done...I need a few Advil now.

well english is the international language for business. They better learn it, if you all ready speak english your lucky, and since you live in america you shouldnt have spanish forced on you, where as immigrants shouldnt have english forced on them .... so long as they dont mind walking everywhere, and guessing on how to pay taxes etc. I dont mind spanish i took it for two years in highschool and i am spanish and argentinian decent. I dont for one second like the "mexicanization" of the southwest and its spreading. The "new" latinos dont want to adopt english, they want it to be just like they are in mexico but they want the ecocomy of america. Go get bent ! Learn english you all are supposedly sooooo hardworking open a book and learn some english.

When I lived in Korea I spoke enough Korean to get along with my family and the local kids that ONLY spoke korean. My mom at the time was my basic translater for family, but when I was out and about I was pretty much on my own to communicate.

Now......I couldn't speak enough Korean to save my life

thats a good example of how people who move here have to try NOT to learn english you really have to stay to your own click your own little mexico neighborhood, and purposely avoid american tv, papers and assimilated immigrants. Its not easy to live in a country and NOT learn the language unless you are somesort of jerk cultural elitest and think your country is soooo great want to move though for some crazy reason???, and then learning english is below you. Gets me pissed.

My daughter is in 3rd grade and is being taught spanish as a requirement. Remember when we took it as an elective in school, and that wasn't until jr high and high school. Now its manditory in elementary school.

I don't have a problem with it...except my daughter is getting damn good at it, and speaks spanish around the house.....fluently. I don't have an idea what she's saying. She's most likely talking about me

The sad thing is we're bitching about something that is not a big deal in the EU. There are countries over there that have multiple languages. Spain, France and parts of the UK have different languages if not variations.

Kinda like Chinese and Mandrin.

Its long been known a young child can learn 2 languages all most as easy as learning one . The older we get , even by Jr high it is more difficult .

Given that you and i are screwed Mike

Yea, and that Grandholm bitch has now made it a high school requirement that they have to take 2 years of a forign language. WTF? IF they are going to do it, do it at the lower levels, not at the high school level.

But Greasemonkey....I agree with you 100%. I go to the fucking bank and the drive up screen says touch here for english. I shouldn't have to touch anywhere for english...it should just be in english.

Well...yea...that's because they want to be able to communicate with the american tourists better to better suit the tourists' needs (and make more money) or they want to come here. America isn't the only country with english as the primary language either.

One of the problems i have with it , as Americans , what second language should we bother with ?

Theres not a common second language here , maybe Spanish , I go to canada a lot . Should i learn French instead ?

Remember the big push for Metric in the USA , guess they gave up on that . Hell that was back when i was in high school . In 5 to 10 years we will be switched to the metric system . Guess not

It's a matter of supply and demand. There is a large supply of Spanish speaking people in American and they are demanding that we accomidate them. I think is sucks but that's how it works. I agree on the bilingual cartoons desensitising the youth. I have a 3 year old at home and she's into Dora the explorer and Handy Manny. These cartoons throw in alot of Spanish words and terminology for the kiddies. I don't have a problem with Spanish speaking Americans trying to homogenise there language into the mainstream, it's the illegals (and the supporters of) that are making demands that piss me off. Driver's licenses for illegal aliens???? Buuulllll shit!

Some info...

Over two-thirds of the world's scientists read in English. Three quarters of the world's mail is written in English. Eighty per cent of the world's electronically stored information is in English. Of the estimated forty million users of the Internet, some eighty percent communicate in English.

FYI - All international pilots and Air Traffic Controllers are required to speak in English no matter where they are at in the world. Listen to the commercial air frequencies in Germany and everybody will be talking in English.

whatever country you are in, you should speak the language.

i am tired of seeing things in spanish as well. i have no problem with people speaking a language other than english, but you better be able to understand what someone is saying to you.

just as a side note, i want to travel to russia but haven't because i can't speak the language. same thing with japan and peru. i can't speak the language so i haven't gone there yet.

cliff notes: i have no idea what i am talking about so just ignore me.

After I left I forgot most everything.

Kamsahamnida, chuminayo. I'm sure those are misspelled as I never even tryed to learn to write the language.

Solution:
1) Build a big f*ing fence on the boarder of Mexico
2) Build a bigger f*ing catapult
3) Evict illegal aliens

now thats what i call a good time. As for more and more spanish being entwined with our everyday life... I can't stand it when i pick a box or package, and have to turn it 3 or 4 damn times before i can find the english! WTF is that shit, honestly? This is AMERICA, learn english or get the f out 'till you do.
