I was doing something similar for chipmunks (floating birdseed on a half bucket full of water) until I figured out that they don't drown until they run out of energy. I don't do it anymore.

Ditto. I'm all for killing them but not making them suffer.

that style works great fro mice. Tehy can't swim. no suffering. It is also perfect for places that you don't get to everyday, because the body won't rot/decay/smell as fast. Works good for cottages.

Why not leave out the water, and put in a handful of d-con?

why would Dcon (which causes long starvation until death) be more humane that a fast drowning?

If you use antifreeze instead of water it keeps the stench almost non existent.

I used the bucket with sunflower seeds in it trick to catch chipmunks before. One day I came out and it looked like the chipmunck holocaust out there. Some bigger animal fell in and splashed all the chipmunck bodies out while it was escaping. Word got out and chipmuncks didn't come near my place for the rest of the year.

So yes, very effective trap.

I have used these in my coups with my birds. best action isn't on the floor where you'd think the animals come up from. best advice is place it middle in the room height wise. I get the best action about 4-5 feet up near a corner or post. for some reason mice and rats love high ground. it must give them a better view of the lay out. my traps hammered the mice in the one coup on a shelf and never got any on the floor in the same coop. I saw mice in my barn one day and figured what the hell? put a trap under the lip of the shelf 5 feet up and had 3 by the next morning.
