From everything I've read, rule of thumb is to try not to leave your dog alone for more than a contiguous 8 hrs. More than that, and they can be holding it for an unreasonable amount of time. Since you're close, and can let him out at lunch, I say go for it.

If you went 10 hours, it wouldn't be the end of the world, either. I've done it before, I just try not to.

Is the dog crate trained? It's kind of a bitch to crate train them if they're older.

If I'm going to be gone more than 8, I'll generally leave mine out of the crate, and he's happier for it. That way if he REALLY has to go, he doesn't have to sleep in it. It doesn't happen regularly, but I've come back a couple of times after an extended leave with a poo pile by the back door (where he gets let outside).

Plus, when he's left out of his crate, he expends more energy barking at shit.

Hint to keep them from chewing shit up: ALWAYS give them real dog toys from the store - don't give them old socks, plastic bottles, etc... They can't always tell the difference between the sock "toy" you've given them and the real thing from the laundry hamper. Also, have a crapload of toys spread around and available. That way they always have an outlet for their chewing close by, and a nice variety.

I have 4 boxers.. 3 adults and 1 pup. They have their own room and a dog door that leads out to a large kennel. 2 of the adults are great, I could leave them home for days and they wouldn't do anything they weren't surposed to. However, the youngest of the adults is pure evil and will get into something if you turn your head and the puppy is just that. I am home with them all day and they sleep most of the time. They are also crate trained and have been left in them for up to 10 hours with no problems (not the puppy) so I guess it would all depend on if the PO did any training with the dog to begin with. But I would say that if you had a spot to put in a dog door to a kennel, thats the route I would go.

Also, if you are going to get him, do it on a friday (assuming you work during the week) that way you aren't bringing him home then just leaving him alone.

Gus having a home where the owner isn't there 24 hours a day, but is a loving environment is better than a kennel; which is most likely where he is going to end up if you don't take him in

I picked up the pup today. He's a very nice dog and was a great sport with all the new people and dogs he's met today. We drove about fifty miles, walked about two miles, found some small treats that he likes for training, and got him some toys and decent dog food at the pet store.

I have noticed he's timid around new places so I was very glad to see him sprawl out and settle right down after our walk a few minutes ago.

The one surprise I had was his name. Kumo. Im not sure why I thought his name was Gus, Kumo just doesn't work for this guy and he doesn't seem to answer to it. Everyone seems to think Bud or Buddy is a good name. I think it will be Bud.

The dog will conform to you, for the most part. Or get renamed Target.

We have a purebred Shiba Inu. He's good for 12-16 hours between bathroom breaks. Sometimes he skips one and ends up going closer to 20 hours. If he is on allergy medicine he usually will go at ~10 hour mark.

He sleeps 18 hours a day. Another 5 hours a day he is looking for a place to sleep. About another half an hour a day he spends trying to convince you to feed him people food. The other half an hour a day I play with him and/or walk him.

I work 4 days a week and the other 3 days he sees a lot more activity. He actually gets more activity in the winter (he really likes the snow).
