To my knowledge Michillinda Beach Lodge was the only one on this side of the state that was 'on the lake'. Their main building is gone but they still have a number of bigger cottages available. There is a small hotel across the street from Grand Haven State Park. Can't remember the name of it though, and it's not on the lake.

Poke around different cities on the Pure Michigan site.

http://www.michigan.org/property/harbor-house-inn/

You can search by city, with options for hotel, B&B, etc.

Around st. joe area this place would have the best view. No beach front at the hotel, just a grassy area a big cliff.

The boulevard inn mentioned above is a little pricy for what it is, kinda uppity place.
