Default 2.5 valve cover exploded?!?!

Just picked up a 1990 yj.
It was like this when I bought it. Meaning I got it for a good price.
But I was wondering if this is common or has happened to anyone else.
The valve cover had exploded. There were pieces of it all over the engine compartment. The only thing left on the engine was the flange to hold it down.
I pulled the plugs(champion) and #3 was missing most of the ceramic and the electrode tip. I tried rotating engine by hand, but it won't move in either direction.
Next step is to pull the head, just curious if anyone knows what I'm gonna find before I do.

A hole lot of broken shit, might even have a piston rod smashed through the cylinder wall. Might as well go get a new engine, ohh you could do a 350 swap and buy my transmission and tcase

The plan was to do a 360 magnum swap, since someone decided to total my dodge ram.
