Default Stop lights that let left hand turn people go first.

These lights annoyed the hell out of me at first, but now that all the lights around my house have been converted over to this system, I have to say that this idea is awesome. I wonder why it took so long for MDOT to put these in.

Is this just a SE Michigan thing right now?

Please explain. Is it because there are USUALLY less cars tunrinng left so they dont have to wait as long or is it a selfish reason? Your work is to the left of your house?

They have started this in central Michigan now, but its only at some intersections. Bastards force you to pay attention.

I thought these were county road lights to begin with, and city streets were slowly adopting them.

I do go other places besides work.

These lights go to a green left hand turn arrow prior to giving people going straight (not skooterbuilt) a green light.

After the left hand turn arrow goes to red, it starts to flash yellow while people going straight have a green light.

I hate when you roll up on one thinking its the style where the left turn goes last and then your flashing yellow goes to solid red and you are sitting half out in the intersection.

I guess that goes back to the previous comment about paying attention.

I understand the concept. I have driven a car a couple of times on a public road. just wondering why you like them now and this discussion deserves a thread on one of the most bad ass websites in the universe.??..

They are fine unless they are like a few around my house that don't blink yellow afterwards and its just a solid red, even worse when no cars are coming in the opposite direction

I know illinois had them 25 years ago. I remember my dad bitching about it on a trip.

I got a ticket when they switched one at 13/sfield 5 years ago. Didnt realize it and made the turn expecting it to turn to an arrow even.saw the cop at the light. Kinda pissed he didnt let me off, was an honest mistake.

I hate that you never know now, i see the reason for chamging them, just wish they did it faster, not over 10 years

Yeah, let's spend more useless government money changing all the lights around town instead of leaving it as is and spending the money on important things.

They're trying to standardize them across the country. It helps to keep the easily confused from causing accidents when they see a big red thing hanging over the road and they're not sure what it means.

Why the change?
This change is the result of a national study conducted for the Federal Highway Administration, which demonstrated that the new signals:

help to prevent crashes
move more traffic through an intersection
and provide additional traffic management flexibility.

Why is it a better left-turn signal?

It's safer. A national study demonstrated that drivers made fewer mistakes with the new signals than with traditional left-turn arrow signals.
It's more efficient The new signals provide traffic engineers with more options to handle variable traffic volumes.
It's more consistent. You'll see the same signals in every state because the new signals are being introduced throughout the U.S.

They have those lights in BR as well, I think it's because MDOT realized people are too dumb to turn right; probably too many accidents with people turing left and right at the same time then turning into the other persons lane (one a two lane highway)

The lights do take a bit getting use to.

I had one crazy experience though, the intersection at 17 mile and ryan rd.
I've driven that way for over 18 years it was very common that you would see the red light change to go straight so it was habit to just make a left and keep going when the green arrow was there. Especially when no one was in the left lane.
Well the new lights were hanging in a raised position for awhile so I got a surprise the morning a did the usual when the light went red as I drove up.....
Ended up in the middle of the intersection with 4 lanes of traffic coming at me lucky they just started to go. So nothing happened, it took me a minute to figure out my mistake. For days after I saw the same thing occur to other "frequent travelers"

Now its common place to see the new left turn signals.

What I can't figure out is the new right turn green arrows that turn green then go to red a few seconds before the main lights turn green.

Yeah, the one at 15 and John R is like that, even in off peak hours.

The problem with them I have is the lag time. Usually the first guy at the light isn't paying attention and burns through several seconds of the green light time before he realizes its time to go.

They have it in Kalamazoo. There are also sensors starting to show up on a lot of intersections so the light will be red when there is no traffic. The only problem with that is it will turn green for one car, then stay green as if there was 40 cars going through the intersection. They only have it set up like that for the directions with heavier flow, but I mainly drive these roads when the traffic is light, so it gets annoying day in and day out.

Is this really all that important when we have so many other issues? I don't think so. To me it's a total waste of money.
