im 27 but Most of my friends(90% or better) who went to college right out of school, did well and graduated but picked a bad field but something they were passionate about, arnt even working in that field anymore. People who went straight to work eather sunk or floated, but most have done very well for themselves and lived within their means. I just don't think how much college costs that its worth it with all the interest and whatnot. My mom graduated in 1999 and is still paying hers and will till shes almost retired. Just crazy to me.

we're debating semantics, but your optimal 37,800$ is pretty tight to 45k take-home. You leave out that 60k job requires a certain dress code, and chance cost of living expenses, etc. It would be tight.

I'll balk at your comment about 1000$ a month repayment and say I'll have paid back somewhere in the range of 120k in 6 years. Most of the kids I went to school with are doing very well and I'd exclude myself and them from this discussion.

Won't those loans get passed down to your family after you die?

That 38k can be reduced drastically, maybe you missed the part where I said I feed a family of 4, own a home, 2 brand new cars, and my bills are less than that....

you probably didn't miss it, you just aren't very smart.

And even though he loves to fly, after talking to several commercial airline pilots had the realization that he really wanted to be a family man, home every night raising his kids and sleeping with his wife.

not sitting in an airport or hotel lounge/bar eating with the co-pilot and tempted to mess around with the flight crews (after a 15 year grind flying red-eye freight for <$30k/year)
My vision is not good enough for a flight slot in the service, cannot be worse than 20-60 uncorrected.

It was merely to show how some career paths that make big money later on have shit pay to start out with. And the reason for mine is because Congress made it mandatory to have 1500 hours of flight time before a regional can hire me, which means I won't be able to start out making a low wage and work my way up right after graduation.

He's 30ish, not sure what kind of money he is pulling down, but I don't think he is having any struggles.
My ultimate goal is to fly for fedex or UPS. Once in with them I can make upwards of $275k per year.

About 2 years as an instructor to build 1500 hours, 3 years as a first officer to get to a captain slot, another probably 4-5 years as a captain before Fedex/UPS will even consider me. Then about 10-15 in with them before I will be making the higher end of the pay spectrum.

You can't use cell phones in planes anyways, so don't worry.

I'm not sure, but with the new systems that will be mandatory in the next 5-10 years, I wouldn't take any chances.

Tell him to get one of these and then he could afford his parents, that is IF he doesn't already have one with that mentality.
