I guess I could say what Jesus did for me was He took away the urge for pot and beer, cusing and swearing. It has all left me and I have no desire for it, even though it was a huge part of my life for more that 20 years. You can't just break habits over night, ask anybody who has an addiction.
Little did I know that I was in bondage or slave to sin. Lust, drunkeness, greed and everything else that we as sinners fall into.
To be free from those things that hold us back or being in relation with God we only need to ask to be forgiven and allow Jesus to help us with what keeps us from Him.
Lets look at God as light and sin as darkness. If we have known sin in our lives and look at it as something we enjoy, God cannot be with us. If we ask God to remove what is not of Him He can reveal what needs to go in order to be in a right relationship with Him. It's not about religion, It's about relationship.
It's hard to explain because He can touch you in a personal way that only you can know He is there. Reveals personal things that only you in your mind can think of and only you know. There is a spirit realm and the battlefield in usually in your mind(overthinking and trying to figure out the things that don't make sense).
I hope that answered your question.
I have a very similar story to Aber61's. i was changed in an instant(born again is what the Bible calls it)in the summer of 2011, happened on my lawn tractor, too. I remember digging up all the terrible things i have done(probably worse than most), and asking for forgiveness in Jesus name. In that instant I felt incredible peace, and have felt the presence of the Holy Spirit in me ever since. Just thought I needed to post this to tell you all that God has proved his existence to me and yes you need to take that leap of faith to avoid paying for your own sin, eternally.

It is by our testimony that others will come to know Christ.
Thanks for that Duke

This is one of my big problems with Christianity. You did a ton of bad shit, I'm assuming, to other people, yet you feel fine about it now because you asked forgiveness from a "spirit/whatever you believe" and instantly feel fine about it.

I don't think you should feel any peace until you apologize and ask forgiveness to the people you actually wronged.

Also, your reason for believing is the calming feeling that you felt, is that correct?

1. I wronged God above all, so I asked Him for forgiveness. Jesus said that the most important commandment is to love God with all your heart soul mind and strength.

There was a man that I sinned against greatly, and I would seek his forgiveness but he is dead.

2. The biggest proof God gave me was the Holy Spirit who lives in me. He leads me to prayer several times a day. He gives me a heart for the hurting and less fortunate(I give to the poor and pray for lots of people). He keeps me from sin, I'm not perfect, but I dropped much of the sin in my life. He compels me to read the bible, almost everyday. Again all this happened instantly, that doesn't just happen by itself.

We should ask for fogiveness from those we have wronged but it's not a 12 step program.

It's not some magical 'feeling' that changes how you feel about things you've done. Most of the time, it's the exact opposite. You see that you've wronged someone and wish to make the right because before you didn't know.
