There is more false information in this thread that could cause people to catch a felony than any other thread on this site.

good luck with the build. the only advice i could offer would be to keep it light and small. people tend to overaccessorize the hell out of home defense guns, just for the cool factor. try to avoid the extra weight and bulkiness if possible.

What the new law did was get the MI definition in line with the federal definition. I can't cite the new requirements, so I will not put out what I "believe" it to be.

What I will say is if you intend to take a shotgun and turn it into a pistol, that you clearly understand the actual law, not what someone or some cop told your buddy once upon a time. I'm not certain you can do this under the new definition.

Default Length

Right from ATF,s websight they say " (6) The term "short-barreled shotgun"
means a shotgun having one or
more barrels less than eighteen inches
in length and any weapon made from a
shotgun (whether by alteration, modification,
or otherwise) if such weapon as
modified has an overall length of less
than twenty-six inches." So that means that in order to not be classified as a SBS which we cant have in MI it needs to have a barrel 18 inches long and an overall length at least 26 inches long . Michigan used to require anything less than 30 to be registered as a pistol but that ended first of yr so now ferderal law says a shotgun must have overall length of 26 . What this has done is stop you from running around with a loaded shotgun in cab of vehicle with you unless it was previously registered as a michigan pistol now if you were to get caught with one not registered as a pistol you would face penalties same as having loaded rifle in cab with you . A rifle has to have a barrel 16 inches long and an overall length of 26 inches to be legal per ATF .

Heres the reference ,

Im positive on the Mi pistol regs what Im not sure of is the oal in Mi. It would make sense to be in line with the feds but hey were talking about Mi law.

IF any of this debate is about thinking my gun will be too short, I'm at 27" from the end of the stock to the end of the mag tube, furthermore my barrel is either going to be a purchased 18" breach barrel or cut at LEAST 20" (depending on length of light I purchase). With a 18" barrel the total length would be at least 32"

Default shotgun

As long as your barrel is 18 inch or over and overall length is 26 inches or greater you are set as far as the federal government is concernd . For Now

The minimum requirements are:
Shotgun barrel length - 18"
Rifle barrel length - 16"
Overall length - 26"

As of the first of this year, there is no more 'Michigan pistol'. That being a rifle or shotgun with a minimal functional length (stock folded/collapsed/pistol gripped/etc) of 26-30". Unless they were registered as pistols before 2013, they are now just plain ole long guns.

This is not to get confused with rifle based pistols, which is basically a rifle without a shoulder stock and no limits on how short the barrel can be. These are manufactured and sold as pistols, and cannot have any sort of shoulder stock added to them.

You were right thats what I get for thinking. So if you buy a mossberg with a pistol grip you can still reg as a pistol but if you add it after you cant ? This is what the state sent us at work I need a better copy.
Edit to add a mossberg cannot be short enongh with the pistol grip.
