Default New member / new builder th350/np205 sm465 swap question

Hello,

I'm new to the forum and am launching into my first somewhat serious 4x4 build. I recently picked up a '57 Willys wagon and a '73 K20 long bed (350 4bbl, th350/np205, d44 front, 14b rear). The plan is to shorten the frame from the chevy and drop the Willys body on top. The th350 has seen better days and reverse is non functional. I'd like to see a sm465 in place of it from which I plan to run a PTO, hydro pump and hydro winch. I've searched a lot and haven't found an answer to what I'll need to make the tranny swap. It sounds like I can use the stock crossmember location, but what I need to know is what I need to bolt my existing np205 to the sm465, and if there is a year range I should be looking for on the tranny. Or will I be better off just looking for a sm465/np205 set up? I can post some pictures later for anyone that's interested in my two heaps.

Thanks for the links. I checked the build thread out and it looks like it will definately be helpful. And yes, I am on oldwillysforum as well. I'll start a build thread soon. I've just been rebuilding the carb and collecting parts at the moment. Soon the work will begin.

while you have the 205 out is a perfect time to twin stick it.

Thanks, thats great information. Can I use the np205 that I currently have on the th350? Will it bolt to the sm465 without an adapter? It sounds like I'll at least need a year range for the spline tooth count?

Can't anyone help me with this? I guess I'll find out when I go and buy a new tranny, but I'd really like to know if there's something I should be looking for before I dive in. Is there a sm465 that will bold to my np205 that's currently on a th350?
