Angry Chevy Steering Box Assembly..HELP

While drilling and tapping my 2wd steering box last night i somehow managed to drop the worm gear out of the bottom of it and spent the next two hours on the ground looking for all those steel ball bearings that ride inside of it. Question is what function to they provide? Everywhere i have looked says there are 24 and i have found 22 after looking high and low. Is it time for a new box, can I run just 22, and is there a easy way feed the balls back into the worm gear? Im so confused, if someone has had this happen to them any insight would be greatly appreciated.
