Default Vortec head swap question

I've done a few vortec swaps with great success making excelent power so can any one tell me why people are saying the 10239906 casting is bad? I just bought a pair of them for $100 in great shape for this motor and googled the casting to make sure they were vortecs bc they didn't have the sawtooth just a single large hump. But the only thing i find is mixed feelings. The hardened valve seats were in very few of them from what I can find and beside that the flow test i've found they flow the same but if I ever wanted to go to a 2.02 valve it makes it near impossible. That being said i'm building a mild 350 in a tbi truck using these heads so i have no intention on doing larger valves. Can anyone shine some light or thought on this and tell me if i'm missing any info? Thanks

They are prone to cracking. They will crack between the valves or between the combustion chamber surface and a bolt hole. Doesn't happen to all of them, but a higher then normal percentage experience it.

The 906's and 062's are both prone to cracking, so that's a non point. However, the 906's came with Inconel hardened exhaust seats. Which basically just means it's not a flame hardened, integrated seat. It's not integrated, it's an insert, much like you would see if you take a set of heads to the machine shop and have seats put it. These were prone to falling out and causing major damage, but from what I have seen, it's rare. At any rate, these are just on the exhaust, and in no way would keep you from putting larger valves in on either intake or exhaust.

Also, another thing, only some 906's had the Inconel exhaust seats. They were only on the heavy duty trucks that saw a lot of low rpm, high load operation that called for a lot of timing and a lot of heat.

Don't be afraid of the head because of the casting number. A vortec head is a vortec head. Period.

Just take an exhaust valve out and see if it's got an integrated seat or a pressed in seat.

I believe I used the 906 heads on my truck. They had 170k on them and I didn't even get a valve job done to them and I haven't had a problem.
