Default Praise or Punishment?

Ok, so my 12 year-old daughter plays left defense on an all-boy pee wee "B" team out of Iron Mountain. They had two games against Escanaba today, and waxed them both times. Her team is good, they won the state tourney last year, and are going down-state again this week. This pisses off Escanaba to on end, and it shows. My daughter was the target of a couple of her opponents today, but she never backed down, repeatedly owning the opposing forwards, drawing a borading and a roughing penalty, and just making things tough for the opposing forwards. I could see she was loving it. However, in the post-game handshake line, she whacked some kid's stick out of his hand then punched him in the face. She wasn't seen by the officials, but was by her coach. He should have addressed the sportsmanship aspect of it, but didn't. I'm secretly proud of my kid for not taking crap from anyone, but don't want her to think I "approve" of such behavior. I was much worse when I played.

So...do I praise her, or punish her? Both, niether, or a little of each?

After the game punish, during the game praise.

My dad took me to the house of a kid I gave a black eye to to apologize. The kid was the bus stop bully.

Appreciate her competive nature but for me sportsmanship is huge. I think this could be a character building moment for her.

It's already too late. Should have said that was poor sportsmanship right when you saw it.

When I played hockey I was punished for be having bad sportsmanship afterwords at home. My parents didn't make a scene in public of it, but I did learn a lesson out of all of it...don't get caught

That's what I thought. We just had a little chat about it. Let her know I have no problem with her actions during the game, but that she crossed the line of bad sportsmanship after. She agrees, and knows that her team relies on her to be there when it counts, not suspended. She told me sahe'll appologize to her coach, that makes me feel good.

The future goon with her fav NMU player.

Don't make a big deal of it. She's a girl trying to hold here own in a boy's league. I say let her slide.

Tell her she should have kicked his ass during the game, and be very proud of her.

Reminds me of my friends daughter. She would fight bullies. Sometimes leaving a black eye, loose tooth or both. She had no tolerance for that.

Most likely. She didn't like kids being picked on that couldn't do anything about it.

I had rather poor sportsmanship all through my competitive years. I wish now that I would have handled it better. I'm not saying I was wrong, just that it would have served me better. Biggest problem I had, was that early on, apparently I developed a reputation, and all the local ref's hated me. I was never able to overcome that locally. I almost always had better away games, because I wasn't in the box for bullshit calls from our local ref squad. There was no real substance to most calls, and I was one of the least goonish players, I just expected fair calls and never got them, especially at home.

I blame myself for not knowing better, and our malfunctioning school system that pushes fairness as a real thing. Nothing is ever "fair", and I didn't accept that, as I was taught otherwise, especially in regards to anything with a sanctioning/governing body. I hope she doesn't fall into that trap, and expect fairness in sports or life. Also, referees don't like to be called out when they are wrong. They get embarrassed and throw you in the box for unsportsmanlike conduct instead of admitting error.

My sister played at NMU for a few seasons as captain or assistant IIRC. Now she is coaching some team downstate.

Had to do the same once, Bus stop bully, swung my backpack with metal lunchbox in it, caught him square in the face/nose.

Told by principal that wasn't nice, but given circumstances was letting it slide.
Parents didn't want him riding the bus the rest of the year

Had to apologize because busting someones face up was wrong, but was also told that it was good i stood up to them.

My take, tell her in the confines of the game that was an unsportsman like move and not to do it again.

Then tell her good job and go get ice cream.

I'd like to. Granted, I don't think I'd survive the encounter, but it'd be a helluva way to go!! All I can picture is Family Guy when Lois goes on a fighting spree and makes Peter her bitch.

If the coach is doing nothing and the Ref's didn't see it.................it didn't happen.
However, prepare her for the next time she plays that team, that she will probably take a huge hit or worse.
Kids tend to work these things out. Its usually us adults that screw everything up in youth hockey.

I tell my boy, if he takes an uncalled for hit that the ref's dont see..........just put the puck in the net where it hurts them the most.

Its Escanaba. Tell her don't punch like a girl next time. Tell her "Daddy will take her to the meat locker and show her how to do a proper punch." Then send her out on the ice.
