baby monitors facilitate the pussification of america. No seriously, they do, UNLESS you are outside working/relaxing while the little bugger is sleeping.

Let the damn kid cry for a minute. It's good for him.

I agree that people need to let thier kids cry a little, it builds carracter<sp>. But for a first time parent a monitor would be a good thing.

We bought a clearance one for $4.95, just basic and received a fancy video one for a shower gift.
Crib was in our room for first 9 months.

The $4.95 one worked great until one of the hellens threw it in the pool 2 years ago, we returned the video one after 6 months, unopened.

Crying a little also teaches self soothing. Kids who arent allowed to cry NEVER learn to deal with stress. The world is a VERY stressful place that many young people can not cope in w/o medication.

This as well.

I also hate the whole crib in mom and dad's bedroom, letting the kid sleep in your bed, etc.

Let the kid cry a little, the more you do, the easier life will be when the kid is a toddler/preschooler.

I am not saying neglect your child, but man, quit being such pussies.

We are first time parents (our daughter is now about two and a half) and we thought we needed one of those fancy monitors with video and all that stuff. We got a very nice one for free from a friend of ours who's child had recently out grown it. We didn't even get it set up before we realized it was overkill and gave it back. FWIW, the friends that gave it to us said that after about a month or so, they stopped using the video option on it as well.

We ended up using the absolute cheapest one that they had at Target, and even that one we only turned on once or twice a week.

Our house is relatively large (about 4,000 square feet) and even without the monitor turned on, if our daughter is crying we can hear her anywhere except the den (if the door is closed) or outside.

We went through two video monitors with our first. The first was a gift, I had to buy the replacement. I think both ended up in the trash before he turned one. I don't think we even had a sound monitor for our second.

I think the video one is by summer. The plug and batteries are startig to be a little wonky after five years. The other basic one is the first years i think. Its eight years old. Served us through three kids. Lol, i used to reverse it and when i was putting the baby to bed, i would use it to listen to the football game
