I'd PM TSAguy or PavementPounder.

I think you can get a TSA approved lock and check the gun. From what I've heard, they never lose luggage with a weapon in it.

Always pisses me off when people fukc around with firearm laws. We can't afford more mishaps even when someone is joking.

I've done it. Here are the steps you MUST take:

1. Go to your airlines website and look up their policy. They may have additional rules beyond what the TSA requires.

2. Print the page and take it with you.

3. Follow said rules.

4. Get to airport early. You may still be given a hassle, you want time. Most likely you will need to pull out and show the airlines rules to the baggage agent, as they may not know them.

You will need a TSA approved gun case. The gun cannot be loaded, and bullets must be loaded either in the original carton or in the magazine(s).

Last airline I flew required the end of the magazines to be covered in Duct Tape, I complied but do not know of this being a TSA rule. And there is at least one airline that will not allow handguns to be checked, but I don't remember which one.

if you are asking this, and have a CPL... your CPL class sucks. You should have taken a better class.

Neither my MI or NC CCW classes covered the specifics on how to fly with a firearm in checked baggage.

I did a blog post about it a while back. It was, surprisingly not a big deal.

Yes, however the individual airlines retain the right to add additional requirements. That is why you should check with them. You could show up, under full compliance with TSA regs, and the airline could say "but we also require..." and they have every right to do that, because they still are a private business.
