Default 220v single phase

I have a 3hp motor on my hoist. The wiring diagram in the manual shows a white and a black for hot leads, and a green for neutral. The motor however has two black lead wires labled L1 and L2, with a green neutral.

Is L2 supposed to be the white, or does it even matter?

The electrical diagram from the manual would be better served if it was drawn by preschoolers.

I'm no electrician but I would sure think l1 and l2 would be both hots and it shouldn't matter which is which. That is just my common sense talking though...

You should swing by and have a beer one of these evening's. I'm in the barn almost every night, don't be a stranger!

I definetly will, once hockey season is over. (end of March)

I was thinking the same thing with L1 and L2, but I just wanted to verify.

Grab one in each hand and have the wife flip the breaker. You'll know if they are both hot.

Thanks, then my hair would be as white as yours.

I know they are hot silly, I just need to know if it matters which one I hook too. One of the legs will be hooked to the safety switch.
