i have been towing with 500hp recently and i have been getting 14.5-15mpg on 35" tires. i have gotten a best of 17 towing and 19 unloaded. i have yet to run my mileage tune which should net me about 21-22 mpg if driven conservatively.

this is with an 04.5 duramax/allison and tuned with efi live. i wouldnt run more than a 60-70hp chip unless you plan on trans upgrades. exhaust should be done reguardless becasue it drops your egt's about 100* and helps the turbo spool quicker.

This is hand calculated and speedometer was 6% off according to GPS for the tires, so added 6% more miles to the tripometer and got 12 to 12.8 mpg's. The best mileage I got with the Duramax is 12.8 @ 70-75 mph towing my jeep, two 4x4 quads, gear and 4 people. I had the chip on safe tow when I calculated this. My best approximation is I was hauling ~7700 lbs. Me or my brother have never gotten better then 18 mpg empty.

while towing keep the rpms at or below 2k. from the sound of it you were on stock tires and doing 70-75 puts you around 2300-2400 rpm.

i get about 12.5-13 when i am even 100 rpm above 2000

Are you running the "moonshine" tune? if not, who's tune are you running or did you make it?

That efilive is pretty sweet but I'm not going to buy it until I build up my trans.

efilive is badass.... you can do anything to the truck and have a switchable pcm!

i didnt want to buy a "prepackaged" tune like kennedy's or moonshine so i contacted mcrat and he told me about his new-at-the-time policy. he hooked me up with the program so i could do all the editing myself but he also sent me an unlocked 500rwhp race/DD/mileage tune for me to load myself. it drives awesome, shifts very smooth and lays down the power when needed.

i just loaded a 50hp tow tune for this weekend, well see how it does compared to the race tune towing.

i wouldnt run anything more than a small tow tune on the stock allison, the race tune will toast it REALLY quick.

if you want some help rebuilding your trans let me know, i have a hoist and one rebuilt allison under my belt, its not too hard and not worth the 1400 that people charge to do it.

Sweet......yea, mcrat knows what he is doing thats for sure! I will for sure take you up on that once I am ready to rebuild it. Did you use a rebuilt kit from Suncoast or ATS or somthing like that?

where the d-max gets 12.5 towing, and CTD should be getting 15-17mpg.

im a huge cummins fan tho, so im bias. (w/ good reason)
The 3rd gen Dodges aren't gonna get 15-17mpg towing. That is normal drive MPG. Towing is going to be more in the 12mpg range. My 2004.5 pulls about 16-17 normal driving and anywhere from 8-14 towing depending on what I'm towing, where I'm towing, and how fast I feel like towing it.

ya, they are rated to about 600 rwhp and about 1200lb-ft but there are guys running about 700rwhp and they are holding fine with just clutches, converter and shift kit.

I'm getting 23 MPG empty right now with only 8000 miles on the odometer. I think my wife got about 15 pulling 10,000 down to Alabama when the truck had only 6,000 miles on it. The engine is no where near even starting to break in, so the economy will only go up from there. With at least the Cummins the sweet spot for fuel economy is at or below 2000 RPM.

2006 Dodge Ram 3500 Mega Cab w/6-Speed T-56 Tranny. Completly stock.

i used to have a 1996 2500 12V ctd with 240+k on it , the last year i went to zukimelt i had a 11 foot camper on and towed a 16' car trailer w/my sami on it,i got 15mpg with that load , it would get 19 all day empty any way you wanted to drive it, had 4:10 gears and a loose convertor in the auto trans, stock with open exaust, if i had to chose again it would have to have a stick and would be a dodge or gm,maybe a 7.3 ford

i work at an airport...for our de-ice truck they decided to run with a f-450....its haulin at least 5000lbs of de-ice fluid and a detroit diesel plus pumps and heaters and a boom for the tall planes......all in all prolly 12000lbs.....it runs great and u wouldn't even know all that was in there untill u go around corners and it wants to tip due to being top heavy......other than that it runs awsome.....but it also is running on jet fuel......which after learning how jet fuel becomes jet fuel....all it is if filtered diesel fuel.....pumped into the tanks as diesel and out at jet fuel....funny how that works but hey....the truck runs great and i would say im not unsatisfied with the ford....and if any of u diesel guys want to see what kind of power your truck really makes run a tank of jet fuel through it.....run much better, stronger, and cleaner then diesel and it wont hurt anything, we run it in all of our ground equipment, trucks, tractors, generators, etc....also if u have a torpedo heater it burns good in them too
