Default Snowmobile registration

Ok, so I got a snowmobile from a friend and its the first one I've ever used, owned, etc.

I realize I need to register it, but there is no title for it. It is a 1987 Yamaha excel 340, and my only plan for it is to use it for ice fishing.

So, how do I go about registering it? It has the old registrAtion number on the hood still, but I can't find a vin on it anywhere.

there is no title for a snowmobile..have your buddy complete a bill of sale and take that to the SOS...pay tax and register it...if you are only using it for ice fishing and do not plan on riding it for fun, you do not need to get a trail permit...however if you ride it for fun anywhere besides private property you need a trail permit...even on a frozen lake you still need the permit...unless of course you are using it for fishing

They will give you a three year license sticker for the sled. You have to renew this when it expires.

You do not need a permit if you are just using it on the lakes for ice fishing. But if you are joy riding on the lake, you are going to prison.

Snowmobiles are exempt from the Trail Permit Sticker if they are:

Operated exclusively on lands owned or under the control of the owner, used entirely in a safety education program conducted by a certified snowmobile safety instructor, exclusively operated in a special event of limited duration which is conducted according to a prearranged schedule under a permit from the governmental unit having proper jurisdiction or a snowmobile used solely for transportation on the frozen surface of public waters for the purpose of ice fishing.
