Default chevy transfer case overheating

have a 2000 chevy half ton 4x4 that the transfer case has started to overheat .. tore it apart fluid smelled burnt but nothing seems bad.. put it back in with new fluid and still seems to be heating up.. Was wondering if anyone has seen this and what might be the cause

The pump pick up screen is most likely plugged
