Default Speaker problem

I currently drive a 2000 pontiac grand am and realized my rear speakers aren't working. I checked the connections on the speakers themselves but they are fine. Havent checked the radio yet but was wondering if anyone has seen this problem or know what could be wrong. The whole stereo is stock so I'm clueless.

Some one could have put a aftermarket stereo in the car before you owned it.When they put the stock radio back in they may not have hooked up the rear speakers. This only aplies if they have never worked since you have ownes the car.
The speakers could be blown.
The amp in the radio could be blown.
If the stock radio uses a external amp it could be blown or have a bad connection.
The fader on the radio could be bad.

the car has never had an aftermarket stereo in it so I am geussing that the radio is bad. it is a 2000. I have yet to tear into it too look at it but I am gonna take the speakers out and test them to see if they are bad.
