Default One drawback to being former military.

Went to Cabela's today to pick up a new rifle I've been eyeing that is on sale. Went through the whole process, and end up leaving empty handed because the background check ends up delayed, for further investigation. Happens every time. Have been told that it happens pretty often with prior military people. I am always able to get the gun in the end, but after a few days when the results finally come in. Just ticks me off. A regular Joe can walk out in less than an hour with their purchase (saw a guy get the same rifle as mine and leave with it while I was still waiting to get delayed), but prior military gets looked at more thoroughly and has to wait. Not right.

Looking to get my CPL next month, which will solve the whole problem in the future. In the meantime, I want my friggin' gun!

Only reason they would delay you would be because there is something psych related in your VA records. They started reporting that information to NICS in 2008. There is nothing other than that that could hold you up military-wise.

Chances are that is has less to do with being a vet, and more to do with having a similar name to someone who who cannot possess firearms. Apply for a personal pin number with the ATF and it will probably stop the problem.

Clean bill of health my whole 10 years in. A good friend of mine who is also a vet has the same problem. He says he was told it's because he was overseas, which I was as well. Still is weird, because his wife walks out with a weapon purchase same day, and she was overseas with him.

Very odd. See if you can make an inquiry with the ATF and see what's going on. There's obviously something there flagging you and with no criminal history and a clean psych profile your issue is unacceptable.

Do you put your SSN on the form when you go to purchase? Sounds like FlatFender might be onto something with the mistaken identity issue if you don't.

Like they said being a Vet probably doesn't have much to do with it. Its hard telling what trips a delay but getting a personal pin number or CPL will solve the problem.

Almost every Iraq or Afghanistan vet I sell to has had no less than a quick "Further review" if not delayed, and some men who are just on leave as well. It's not fun telling a man who's only home for a couple days that the FBI won't allow me to sell him his new firearm.

Same thing happens to my dad, he was unable to serve (press accident took his trigger finger) but a guy with the same name has been flagged so it takes a day or so to get them sorted out.

Buy a couple more, and sort out the rest later.
