We have the 2014 law because of this : http://www.kidsandcars.org/cameron-gulbransen.html

First, let me state that this guy (and most of the stories on that website) went through a terrible tragedy.

However, here's the problem: mathematics never enter the discussion. Rational people and governments don't act on an "n" of one for legislation like this.

I'm against manadatory nannies like the backup camera. If you want to buy one, great! I used one in a Ford Raptor and it was really nice - especially the trailer hitch mode. But to GM's point, that doesn't mean it'll get used (like windows, mirrors, common sense, etc...).

A few years back a moron in my neighborhood (a FoMoCo design engineer, btw) backed a then-new m-plated minivan out of his driveway, relying completely on the "something's in the way" alarm to guide him.

The sensor system may work for toddlers or tricycles, but it doesn't pick up a Chevy crossing in the street behind it. He drilled my fresh from senior citizen hands pristine 10 year-old Lumina in the side so well that the van was sitting on the top of the door with the tires almost off the ground and the bumper intruding into the passenger compartment (it hit the passenger in the shoulder - I know because it was me).

Based on no alarm (seriously) the genius again hit the gas thinking "he was stuck in a pothole" and started pushing the Lumina sideways.

I vividly remember him telling the cop that responded that "the alarm didn't go off", honestly sounding like he should get a pass for it. The cop (graciously) gave him a chance to rethink his story, but he stuck with "it was the alarm's fault". For that, the cop hit him with a driving without due regard and a couple other citations - largely based on the fact that the cop's kids rode their bikes past this house routinely.

So I have a population of one (which according to "kidsandcars.org" is all I need) that says alarms don't work and lull morons into a false state of security.

I think the biggest issue is that, you're just NOW figuring this out?

I agree with you, there just some people that are so stupid they should not be allowed to do anything that could be hazardous to someone else

I figured it out a while ago, I just still try to give people the benefit of the doubt. I think I'm done with that.

Sounds like he was moving fast enough that the alarm wouldn't have had enough time to sense anything and go off.
