I am still using my 8 year old gerber folding knife with a guthook. I have gutted countless deer with it and the guthook is still sharp enough that my 13 year old gutted her first deer by herself with it this year.

I've used it a couple times to cut open the skin, cut a little slit then invert the kinfe and use the hook to cut the skin without worrying about cutting the stomach or anything; just get a good hook on it and pull.

I've only done that a once or twice after that it got a little too dull to do that with and I haven't taken the time to sharpen it right. But the main blade keeps an edge pretty good

I have this knife as well; it was the first knife my dad gave me, I keep it with me because of the sentimental value but I never actually liked gutting with it, I prefer a shorter blade, seems to handle better for me

I don't have one with the gut hook, and I don't see why I would ever use one. Just don't stab the damn thing straight down and you'll be more than fine. I haven't accidentally poked the guts since I was 15, and that's a mistake you only make once.
I used to have that same complaint, until this year. Decided to throw my knife in a pot of boiling water and let it sit for a few minutes...the knife came out perfectly clean, and I was left with some nice broth to sip on.

(kidding about the broth, but the boiling trick works awesome).

Yep, I do the same, just add a little dish soap too.

Both my dad and I have this knife. Works great. Maybe get the next size up if you like to break the tail bone a little easier.
