Try to dig up old pictures or items that remind them of some special day/memory and make that into something.

It's always the little simple things that can trigger a fantastic memory that is buried deep in a bunch of junk files.

What if you got all of your siblings together and had a professional picture taken and gave it to them professionally framed? You could split the cost with your siblings and maybe do one of all the grand kids.. plus you can have copies of the pictures.

Make time for them. Give them a gift certificate of you and your wife taking them to dinner, a movie, to the zoo, etc. What your parents don't have enough of is time with their children and grand children. You can buy them anything but it's much more meaningful if you make the time to be with them. A couple years ago we took my folks to the Fox to see the play "White Christmas". It was from their era and they really enjoyed it.

To an elderly couple, time is the biggest gift.

Tell them that you will work like hell in the next election to reverse this past tragedy.

Make it a gift card.

Dale Jarred racing gift certificate...buy each one 4-5 laps. Great & fun experience.

Or,

A glider ride, there was a place out near Almont that use to give rides. I'm sure they are still around up there somewhere.
