The Republican party needs to find middle ground on a few social issues to win. I know several people that have Republican values but vote Democratic solely because of abortion and gay marriage and disregard everything else.

both parties need to find a middle ground and stop being so extreme, you would have a lot more voters willing to vote for the better candidate
