Not that I think it will happen, but I probably should have included an option for an electoral tie between Obama and Romney

Obama will take a strong lead at first. Then, when people get out of work and go vote, Romney will pass him.

I'm hoping for a split between who wins the electoral vote and who wins the popular vote. Maybe that would inspire our legislators to finally seriously considering getting rid of the Electoral College.

Didn't this happen with Bush/Gore? Maybe I am wrong.

Yes it did. Gore won a slight majority of the popular vote but lost the election.

I guess to be more specific with my previous statement, I want Obama to win the electoral vote and Romney the popular vote. In the past, the Republicans have traditionally been the most opposed to getting rid of the Electoral College and I think that if the process screwed their candidate maybe that would change their mind and this would be something they could actually work together with Democrats on.

The split between the electoral vote winner and the popular vote winner also happened in 1824, 1876, and 1888. In both 1876 and 1888 it was the Republican who won the electoral vote but lost the popular vote. It was also a Jeffersonian-Republican who won the electoral vote in 1824 while losing the popular vote. So each time it has happened in the past, it has benefited the Republicans (or the closest party to them as in 1824).

The people living on welfare only have one job every 4 years to do, and that is to vote! They will make sure they get off their bums and vote to keep those welfare checks coming. Its up to the working class to get out there after work and vote.

why would you want this?

I am all for a popular vote, but does that really make sense based on the electoral college and why it exists?

Would a president even care about north dakota or arkansas or something if they were only campaigning for the popular vote? They'd spend all their time in california, and the east coast. Is that any good for the rest of us?

Our legislators probably understand the history of this nation, and realize without the electoral college, there is no republic.

I hope for Romney. I am curious as to how this storm out east will come into play with it though. I am sure if it is close there, someone will be crying about it.

While I would like the outcome to be the second option given, I'm afraid the outcome will be the fourth.

God speed Mr. Romney, America NEEDS you.

I like the Gary Johnson option as a choice anyway.

Obama wins Ohio and electoral college.

Obama is much more to the center and a moderate and Mitt is all over the map on just about everything.....Ohioans make cars and stuff...so this is my opinion from your "A" typical Ohioan side.

The problem with the way the electoral college is set up is that it gives too much weight to states like North Dakota, Vermont, and Wyoming. With a guaranteed minimum of 3 electoral votes for every state, regardless of population, the vote of a person in Wyoming ends up being worth about the same as 4 votes in New York. Put another way, places like Wyoming and the Dakotas have one electoral vote for every 140,000 people while Texas, California, Florida, New York... get one vote for every 500,000 people. That seems much less fair to me than popular vote.

Yes, a candidate will spend much more time in places like California and New York, but it seems with a greater percentage of our voters in these place, that should be the logical thing to do anyway. And as it currently stands, yes, states like California and New York are generally going to throw all their electoral votes to the Dems but if they were going by popular vote, Republicans would do pretty well in some of the populous regions of these states (Orange County, Riverside County, San Diego County in CA and New York, Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, and possibly Erie County in New York).

Even in Michigan, once you get outside of Metro Detroit, the number of Republican votes generally outnumbers the number of Democratic votes, especially at the presidential level. I would think that those voters would love for their voices to be heard instead of just being lost in the electoral college system.
