Question Excessive compression? Volkswagen.

01 VW Jetta. 2.8 vr6.
Misfires on cyls 1,3,and 5. Valve train rattle and cam position error code. Bank one compression shows 200+. Bank 2 consistent at 160#.

Other codes for knock sensor circuit high. I assume due to the engine noise. Just came from the dealer for a drive by wire repair. Looks like they replaced two wires from the throttle body to the pcm.

Sounds like it jumped time or a chain is loose. What next, Tear it open?

It sounds like the belt jumped a tooth or two letting the compression build more since the cam timing is off.

Sounds like it jumped time.Vw's are known for it,and they are interference motors,so you most likely bent valves.Sorry to say but you are going to spend a lot of money to fix it.

Has a chain and it probably had a tensioner fail and jumped a tooth. Maybe another person that thinks oil changes are silly and a wate of money.

Time to take it apart.

I dont care how often you change rhe oil,vws jump time,all the time.The turbo charged beattle motors call for the belt to ve changed at 60,000 miles.I have seen several that broke before 50,000. It is easy to spend $1500 just repairing the 5 valve head.That doesnt include labor to pull and reinstall it,or any other damage the engine may have suffered.
Vws are exspensive to own unless new.

I was just going be the info supplied, sounds like a chain issue. These had alot of trouble with the upper chain tensioners and chains stretching. We see chain tensioner issues on alot of different brands and normally upon disassembly, plugged/restricted passages are what we find.

Totally different engine. But thanks for the read.
This one appears to have 2 chains, one upper and one lower. The bitcha about it is they are on the back of the engine. Looks like its time to call the junk yard.

LOL, this is funny because I just helped replace a timing set on an exact same car. You think it's a bitch to pull the front clip to get the intake off? That's about the easiest part of the job. you have to drop the trans to get at the chains.

you can pull the intake and valve cover and set timing to verify both cams are still in time. It it jumped a tooth, you should still be ok (especially seeing how you have compression still). The car I worked on had the lower chain snap (it was a new chain about 30K miles on it, 2nd chain).

That's what happened to this car a while back. Now I'm stuck working on the replacement, and a warantty is now involved. This could take day's.

I F'in hate working on VW'z, they piss me off. I want to punch every German in the face for how those engineers design that shit. I tried to tell my boss that I don't work on Vw'z after I was assigned one, he told me I work on anything they pull into my work stall, he was right but luckily it was an easy job.
