Default Hesitant Starter in brand new AMC

I just rebuilt my AMC 360 and raised the compression up to 10:1. I tried cranking it today and when I hit the starter it gave a little grrrr.... then nothing. Kinda like the motor got stuck while trying to start. I tried it again and it started turning but a little rough, but after a crank or two it started.
Am I at the limits of this starter? Do I need a high torque starter, or is this one just going bad?

If its a new motor may be tight, or starter is getting old. My 360 is 9.2 compression and cranks fine hot cold don't matter
