Default pintle hitch

Ok guys sorry for all the newbie questions about the trailers, but i have been looking into getting a used one obviously the cheaper the better, so with that in mind would you recommend towing your rig or maybe even 2 with a trailer that has a pintle hitch instead of a regular ball style.

No, but I'm picky. I don't like how they "bang" when you stop and go. That said we use them at work.

they are not to bad if you have enough weight on them, but they are enough to drive you insane other wise. i found a 12k rated 2-5/16 coupler that bolted in place of the pintle loop on the front of our equipment trailer. its 100% less annoying.

My friend has a huge dent in his tailgate after a trailer popped off of the ball while loading a jeep onto a flatbed. Pintle is better in that aspect.

I would much rather have a pintle. I have seen lots of ball hitch trailers come off but I have never seen a pintle style come off. The noise has never bothered me, I use them all the time.

My experience is any trailer without much weight will be noisy. However, every pintle hitch I have used has matched the ring. I have heard the pintle/ball hitch combos have some slop and bang around. Anything more than a smaller utility trailer my vote would be pintle.

Our 40 ton pintle hitches have a shock absorber in them to prevent the banging and lurching. Its a pretty swift setup.

I would think most ball and coupler failures are user error. Forgetting to latch the coupler happens often, and I bet many trailer users have never adjusted the coupler itself. As long as you have quality components and use them properly, you shouldn't have any issues with either style connection.

I have seen multiple ball hitches come off that were secured correctly. I have all the stuff to build a trailer and I am putting a pintle on it.

Most Pintle hitches have a higher strenth rating than ball hitches. Make sure whatever you do, you keep your strength rating the same or higher.
