I should have posted her first, thought I already had, but noticed I neglected to. Sorry about that.

I am working on my second K5 Project, had one several years ago almost completed and had to sell for personal reasons. I was able to pick up a rust free '81 K5 and have started the process all over again. My first one was a 400 SBC/TH400/NP205 combo with FF 14 Bolt and Dana 60 on a 4" lift. Will be going the same route again, but this time am stepping up to a 454 and 6" of lift. I know many will say "why a TH400 instead of a manual?" - after three knee surgeries playing with a clutch is no longer a pleasent experience. As one gets older, we learn alterntives methods of completing the same process.

My goal is to build a rig that can crawl the old trails in the western UP, where I lived a lifetime ago. Not looking for a high reving mudder, but want tons of torque to turn 40" tires over obsticles and ruts. A 454 might be "overkill" but I have three of them laying around, and only 1 400 SBC left and that might be gone soon. As I get going, I will post pictures. I would appreciate input as I go along, learning from others mistakes is much less expensive than learning from my own. Lord knows I have made pleanty of my own in the past that have been learning experiences not only for me but others.

Welcome, heavy K5's need a BBC. I have built one from the ground up with your drivetrain combo, if you have any questions feel free to ask. The best thing you can do is switch to cross over steering or full hydro.

BBB,

I have been looking into cross over steering. Just getting started on this one, as of right now I have a body on a frame with old stock springs holding up the vheicle. Using a 10 bolt 8 lug front to keep off the ground with a 14 bolt ff in back. Dana 60 is sitting on stands and needs to be gone through. I got a screaming deal on two Dana 60's (less than one would normally pay for one) - the problem is the Chevy axle is DRW hubs and the Dodge axle went too fast - traded for a low mileage 454! I traded before I could swap hubs, so I will need to get a set of SRW hubs for the chevy axle.

Need to do a little work on my shop before I get too far into the truck - would like to work in heated shop this year, tired of freezing!
