I use to use books before internet came about.
I'm not of much help because I haven't researched much of anything I have in over 20years lol
You did remind me though that I have a coin I found in my pocket change when I was a kid dated 1824 in what appears to be mint shape, but foreign.
Never could find shit on it when I was looking through books!

There are a couple of places in Birmingham along Woodward that can help you out with valuations. My in-laws have used Abbott\\\\\\\\\\'s a few times for getting estimates for insurance purposes and there are two or three other coin dealers within about a half mile from them (but I cannot recall the names off the top of my head).

You can also keep an eye on the schedule of events at the Bloomfield Hills Raddisson Hotel since they have appraisers in there every few months for free sessions - sort of like a local Antiques Roadshow (I'm not sure if they list events on their website but they are usually advertised in those free local weekly papers or on Patch.com.
