wonder if the author's next blog will be about the excessive cell/data plan costs?

The f'ing comments section killed me.

People really believe that government intervention on limiting corporate profit is the way to go.

Unreal.

So if you want to voluntarily purchase something you're going to have to pay for it. Is that what he's trying to say?

I don't have cable or internet at home. Just my phone. $150 a month for us to watch garbage for hours a day. I just watch dvds now and spend more time doing more productive stuff.

Just got back from vacation. I think I turned on the TV long enough to find out that people are killing each other because they don't like what other people are posting on that other glorified TV station Youtube. I would have been just fine not turning it on at all.

I don't have time to watch TV anymore.
Both of my kids are in Ice hockey so I'm either at the Ice Rink, the garage, or at work.........7 days a week.

5 TV's in my house, and I don't think any of them get watched more than two hours a week.

The article is common sense. If you currently have any sort of expense that is a want and cut it out you could do the same math. My life would suck if I didn't have internet at home. No internet at home means that I am in the office 80 hours a week rather than my current 40, and if something goes wrong in the middle of the night I have to go somewhere to gain connection instead of just opening my laptop. I could live without cable TV since we download a lot and I only sort of listen to TV while I work but why should I?
Here is a list of discretionary spending that I can think of off the top of my head that would also net you the same benefits financially.

Coffee
Cigarettes
Lunches
Dinners
Extra driving
Soda
Sports drinks
Hobbies
5 hour energy
Snacks
Processed food
Gym memberships
Phone service
New vehicle or newer used vehicle costs
Clothes (you could buy at salvation army)
Animals

My point is, I could go on and on. If you live within your means and save properly for retirement then you don't have to give everything you enjoy up. I did the Dave Ramsey financial peace university about a year ago. I took the class because I thought there was some good information about investing. I was really surprised at our discretionary spending. We have cut it some but why save every penny to either leave it to your kids or build wealth for when you are 60 if you can reasonably save and still enjoy your life?

I think what is more crazy is that people taking that class with me couldn't seperate the wants and the needs. Really, budgeting is basic math.

Between Mike and I, we have lost over 200lbs and we have a theatre room and 5 TVs. It's more about eating less calories and getting up off your ass to move more than it is about what you own and whether you watch tv. In fact, I watch 20-45 minutes of TV on weekdays for my exercise videos.

For once I agree with you. I mostly quit watching TV 10 years ago.

I'm not sure what's available in Battle Creek, but my antenna pulls in 26 channels between Detroit, Toledo, and Ann Arbor, all without a rotator.

And most of the programming is in HD!

In your list, you forgot to add in children.

By antenna i meant 80's era rabbit ears and a converter box lol. I am sure it would do better with a better antenna

I have a basic cable package, something like 18 channels but it is hardly ever on and when we do watch it is either a sporting event, a cartoon or the discovery channel though that is getting to be less and less as they come up with more horrid "reality" tv shows. Basically the only reason I have it anymore is that with the "multi-product discount" I end up saving money vs the cost of having only cable internet.

we dont have cable tv.. we do have a convertor box but it got lost in a box during our move 2 years ago.. I bought a PS3 a while back with tax returns hardly ever play games on it, but we use it for netflix. We don't watch that much either, just watch a movie during dinner/before bed.. our baby takes up most of our time..
